Piers Morgan hits out at anti-vaxxers amid Austria's controversial new lockdown plans

It doesn’t take much to get Piers Morgan, 56, going when on the subject of anti-vaxxers, and those who have chosen not to have the Covid vaccine for personal reasons. Taking a robust stance every time, his Twitter followers were also in agreement with his reaction to Austria’s latest plans to curb the spread of the virus by placing their unvaccinated residents into a further lockdown.

Taking to the social media site following reports of the Austrian government’s announcement, Piers shook his head while hitting out at anti-vaxxers.

He sighed: “I don’t agree with this.

“But I suspect it will make many of the anti-vaxxers take the jab.”

He went on to add the sly swipe: “Thus proving their protest is just posturing.”

It comes after ministers announced plans of a new lockdown for unvaccinated residents.

It was first proposed in two regions – Upper Austria and Salzburg – but has since been extended to the rest of the country.

The lockdown will affect around two million of their 8.9 million population from midnight on Sunday 14 November.

On Friday, ministers revealed anyone over the age of 12 who has not been double-jabbed will only be allowed to leave their homes for work, school, exercise and buying essential supplies.

“It’s our job as the government of Austria to protect the people,” he said.

“Therefore we decided that starting Monday… there will be a lockdown for the unvaccinated.”

He also called on people who have already been vaccinated to get their booster jabs, suggesting “we will never get out of this vicious circle” otherwise.

In the comments section of Piers’ post, Karen Bellamy agreed with the former Good Morning Britain star: “I’m pro vaccine but this doesn’t feel right.”

“I’m fully vaccinated and think this is absolutely outrageous,” Stesteste added.

Others however disagreed with the presenter’s stance on the new lockdown plans forcing people to get the jab.

Anthony Fairall snapped back: “It’s been almost a year Piers. Us ‘anti vaxxers’ aren’t phased by this at all. It’s called resilience. Something you’re obviously lacking.”

Marsh said: “If anything, it’s going to make them not want the jab even more.”

Chappie Abrahs commented: “This would actually mean more if @piersmorgan would actually read the comments of how many people disagree with his rhetoric…”

“What would be an example of non-posturing protest?” someone else teased.
