Love Island’s Dr Alex George has recorded a candid video where he recalls almost dying from sepsis.

The former reality TV star has returned to work for NHS since his stint on the ITV reality staple, and has been working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

But Dr Alex revealed that he went through a terrifying ordeal of his own, where he contracted sepsis in 2017.

Initially cycling to work, he felt lethargic, and eventually admitted himself to hospital later that evening with extraordinarily high blood pressure.

‘It was very scary, but I was rushed through into a cubicle where I was seen immediately by one of the senior doctors there,’ he revealed.

‘I think what really scared me at the time was A, I was alone, B, how quickly it happened and also the fact that it took me a long while to respond.’

Alex said that his experience spurred him on to return to work in the NHS and also helped people recognise the symptoms of sepsis, which include slurred speech, shivering, not being able to urinate and discoloured skin.

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening illness where the body is unable to release chemicals to fight off an infection, and the imbalance of chemicals present can seriously damage your organs.

Alex has also recently shared his first experience of not being able to save a patient whilst on shift as a doctor, a process he described as ‘really difficult.’

‘The first time it happened to me was a real shock,’ he explained. Despite what you might feel going to medical school or watching these TV shows, you can’t save everyone.’
