Kerry Katona’s ex husband George Kay ‘died after fatal cocaine binge’ as investigation continues

Kerry Katona’s ex-husband George Kay allegedly died ‘after eating a quantity of cocaine’ as the police watchdog confirmed it was investigating Cheshire Police following the death.

Cheshire Police has ‘referred themselves’ to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, following allegations 39-year-old George was found ‘eating’ the drug before his death.

His tragic passing was confirmed earlier this month, with the former rugby star dying from an apparent overdose.

Now a spokesperson for the IOPC has confirmed there is an investigation following his death.

They told Metro.co.uk this evening: ‘We have begun an investigation.

‘We are examining the contact between the man who sadly died and Cheshire Constabulary, in the hours before his death, following reports concerning his welfare.’

According to the Liverpool Echo, George died after ‘eating a quantity of cocaine’ in front of Holiday Inn staff in Sutton Weaver, Cheshire.

Officers were called to the hotel at 9.54pm on 5 July, however are reported to have left after George returned to his room. They were then called back after it was claimed staff checked on George to allegedly find him ‘eating a large amount of suspected cocaine’.

A statement from Cheshire Police read: ‘At 9.54pm on Friday, July 5, police received a report of concern for the safety of a 39-year-old man at a hotel on Wood Lane, Sutton Weaver.

‘Officers attended and spoke to the man, as well as hotel staff. All parties agreed that he could remain at the hotel.

‘At 10.11am on Saturday, July 6, police received a further report of concern for the man’s safety.

‘Due to the information provided the caller was advised to contact North West Ambulance Service for assistance.

‘Paramedics attended the hotel and the man was taken to Warrington General Hospital for treatment, where he sadly later died.

‘The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

‘As with any death following police contact, Cheshire Constabulary has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.’

Kerry is yet to publicly comment on her former husband’s death, however at the time an insider told The Mirror Kerry was heartbroken: ‘Kerry was told this afternoon that George suffered an overdose and was taken to hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.

‘No one yet knows what he overdosed on or whether it was intentional or an accident. Kerry is heartbroken, he’s DJ’s dad and she loved him once.’

Shortly after the sad news broke Kerry’s daughter Molly was forced to defend her mother after Fathers 4 Justice tweeted: ‘Tragic news about the passing of George Kay who came to Fathers4Justice for help.

‘He was heartbroken after @KerryKatona7 denied him access to daughter Dylan-Jorge. Katona’s not “heartbroken”. She has blood on her hands. Matt O’C #RIP.’

Kerry’s eldest daughter Molly, who she shares with ex-husband Brian McFadden, hit back at the tweet to defend her mother and said: ‘I suggest take this tweet down, how dare you make statements this disguisting at such a vulnerable time, your accusations are innacurate nd extremely insensitive.

‘I truly hope you never find yourself in this kind of situation. Vile words from a vile person you should be ashamed [sic].’
