YouTube Rewind 2019 branded ‘lazy’ as it goes back to its roots for compilation

YouTube Rewind 2019 has dropped and, all in all, people are a bit underwhelmed.

The new offering, For The Record, goes back to the roots of YouTube Rewind, with the video being a compilation of the most liked and viewed videos and creators of the year.

And it’s fine.

‘Really kept waiting for this year’s #YouTubeRewind to actually be a rewind,’ vlogger Evan Edinger tweeted.

‘Idk like look at different trends and things. Instead it’s now just a top 10 list? I mean… last year’s was bad, but this year’s kinda just doesn’t say anything. Just… stats.’

‘So the new #YouTubeRewind is basically a “top 10 most liked/watched videos of 2019” compilation. thats lazy,’ one fan wrote.

‘The new #YouTubeRewind is better than the last one but they put less effort into it ngl :/ it looked like a statics video, the old style they had is better,’ another unimpressed viewer added.

One underwhelmed viewer pointed out: in 2018 we made something you didn’t like… so in 2019… we made something so boring that there’s no way for you to form any sort of opinion on it, which creates indifference, which means it CAN’T be hated.*** #YouTubeRewind.’

Ouch.

However, Casey Neistat came to YouTube’s defence, saying: ‘I liked rewind 2019.

‘Not as sensational or produced as years passed but i appreciate; -not just same old faces (except my same old face) -highlighting new creators -how international it was -the focus on likes and channel growth -seeing @pewdiepie.’

Kicking things off by mocking 2018’s Everyone Controls Rewind after it became the most disliked video in YouTube history, the platform went back to its roots, going for a simple run-through of the most liked videos, YouTubers, and breakout creators of the year.

‘In 2018, we made something you didn’t like,’ the video reads. ‘So in 2019, let’s see what you DID like. Because you’re better at this than we are.’

Eugene Lee Yang’s Coming Out video features first in the montage, with Ariana Grande’s 7 Rings as the soundtrack.

Tati Westbrook, Jenna Marbles and the Sidemen also feature, with a countdown of the top 10 most liked videos, including Shane Dawson’s conspiracy theories and, perhaps controversially, James Charles’ No More Lies video, which was a response to Tati Westbrook’s exposé.

Of course, they couldn’t ignore the biggest music videos, with the likes of Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road and Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy featuring, and Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s Senorita taking the top spot

Dance, gaming, and beauty are given their own categories, before the video runs through the most popular breakout creators of 2019, including Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp and Jennelle Eliana.

As for the most viewed creators? Stars like MrBeast, David Dobrik and Felipe Neto are high up on the list with, of course, PewDiePie at the top with a massive four billion views over the year.

‘Thank you for a record-breaking 2019,’ the video reads at the end, before running through some of the most impressive records broken over 2019, including T-Series hitting 100 million subscribers, and Noor Stars being the first Middle-Eastern creator to reach 10 million subscribers

Well, that’s that then. See you next year.
