Shirley MacLaine turns 90: Actress shares birthday plans and teases new 'wonderful' book


Iconic actress Shirley MacLaine is marking her 90th birthday with a new addition to her collection of books.

As well as winning an Oscar, an Emmy, and six Golden Globes, the Steel Magnolias star has written numerous books throughout her eight-decade career.

Shirley has authored novels on metaphysics, spirituality, and reincarnation, alongside her best-selling 1983 memoir, Out on a Limb.

The Hollywood legend announced a new book, The Wall of Life, that will feature photos and stories from her life with over 150 images from personal archives.

“I have lived a wonderful life and I wanted to share it,” Shirley told PEOPLE. “All of the photos brought back such wonderful memories.”

The photo collection will give fans a glimpse into intimate family memories and images from some of the most significant figures from film, entertainment, and politics.

As the book’s summary reads: “She reveals the stories behind each photo, exploring ambition, love, friendship, motherhood, art, political activism, and more.”

Ahead of its release on October 22, Shirley revealed she plans to celebrate her milestone birthday on April 24 with an intimate dinner with friends.

“We’re getting together and I hope to eat something good,” she told the outlet.

After winning an Oscar for 1983’s Terms of Endearment Shirley has starred in classic films such as The Apartment, Postcards from the Edge, and Sweet Charity.

Following her 2022 appearance in Only Murders in the Building, the actress will soon return to screens with a new movie titled, People Not Places.

“It’s a wonderful script and we are getting ready to start and will see what happens,” she says of the film.

As she celebrates her 90th birthday Shirley says she is most grateful “that I can keep working. I have my friends and I am really healthy.”
