Christmas markets are opening their doors to festive revellers across the country. To kickstart the season, new data has crowned the UK’s “most popular” Christmas market, based on its photograph opportunities and frequency of shares across social media platform Instagram.
But which Christmas market came out on top?
According to the analysis, London’s famous Winter Wonderland was beaten by three other Christmas markets – one of which is running in “virtual” format this year.

Manchester Christmas Market
Manchester Christmas market was found to be the top-scoring Christmas market based on the analysis, with 48,300 hashtags to date.
The market runs from November 12 to December 22 and has attracted more than nine million visitors throughout the festive season in years gone by.
Nestled in Piccadilly Gardens, Visit Manchester said in 2021 the markets returned “with a bang”, offering plenty of yuletide bars, craft sellers and a sage with live music.

Edinburgh Christmas Market
The Scottish capital city’s Christmas offering took second place based on the analysis, with 40,900 hashtags.
Last year it welcomed over two million visitors despite the pandemic.
Spanning six weeks, the market offers ice skating, plenty of seasonal shopping opportunities and the chance to meet Santa himself.
London Winter Wonderland
London’s huge Winter Wonderland, set in the heart of Hyde Park, has returned for 2021 after taking a hiatus in 2020.
The attraction has an Instagram hashtag count of 26,400 and is set to be the longest-running Christmas fair in the UK, opening on November 19 until January 3 2022, providing plenty of time to get Instagram pictures.
Among the many attractions on offer at Winter Wonderland, there is an ice rank, plenty of rides and games, and even live performances including a Christmas circus.
Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market
Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas market boasts 12,600 Instagram hashtags, the fifth-highest of any Christmas market in the UK.
The Bavarian-style attraction offers German food and drink as well as Germanic stalls, all of which have proved popular for social media sharing.
The market runs between November 4 and December 23.
