Disney fans have long been awaiting the release of its live-action Mulan remake, that is finally dropping in September.

The upcoming film, based on the much-loved Disney animation, was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic, with its release being scrapped in the US and internationally back in March.

It’s set to see Yifei Liu in the title role as Mulan, with reports revealing and estimated $200million (£159million) had been spent on bringing the film to life.

It was recently announced that Mulan will now premiere instead on new streaming platform Disney Plus, instead of the cinematic release it was initially scheduled to have.

Viewers wanting to watch Mulan, however, will not only have to pay out for a Disney Plus subscription, but also a premium charge in order to access the movie.

Where can I watch Mulan and when is it being released?

Disney has confirmed that Mulan will be available to watch on its Disney Plus streaming service as of September 4.

In countries where Disney Plus isn’t available, Mulan will be released in cinemas.

Confirming the release, Walt Disney Co CEO Bob Chapek revealed why Mulan is now being released for streaming and said in a statement: ‘Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses.

‘The global reach of our full portfolio of direct-to-consumer services now exceeds an astounding 100 million paid subscriptions — a significant milestone and a reaffirmation of our DTC strategy, which we view as key to the future growth of our company.’

How much will it cost to watch Mulan in the UK?

It was announced that it would cost viewers $29.99 (£22) extra on top of their Disney Plus subscription to access the movie on its release next month.

For UK-based Mulan fans, watching the film will set you back £19.99 on top of the monthly £5.99 subscription fee to Disney Plus.

The Premium Access cost will allow viewers to watch Mulan as many times as they choose, as well as the opportunity to download the film onto multiple devices.

Disney Plus UK confirmed the charges via Twitter in a tweet that read: ‘The legend arrives. Stream Disney’s #Mulan on September 4. Exclusively available to Disney+ subscribers with Premier Access for £19.99.’

It’s the only way to watch the film here in the UK, as it’s being released exclusively to Disney Plus subscribers with premiere access as of next month, before it later becomes available to all subscribers.

Mulan will also be made available on streaming platforms, including Apple TV, Google and Roku, via in-app purchasing.

Mulan is set for release on September 4 in both the UK and the US.
