Watching Christmas films makes us happier so switch on Home Alone and screw the Scrooges

Christmas is around the corner, with restaurants already covered in tinsel and festive music playing absolutely everywhere you turn.

And, despite Scrooges popping up all over social media complaining about how early Home Alone is on TV, it turns out watching Christmas films makes us all happier.

So, there.

In fact, a psychologist revealed that switching over to Deck The Halls or Die Hard actually produces dopamine, releasing a feel-good hormone inside you.

During a chat with DoYouRemember, they said: ‘It does create that neurological shift that can produce happiness.

‘I think anything that takes us out of our normal habituation, the normal day in, day out … signals our senses, and then our senses measure if it’s pleasing or not.’

Basically, fill your boots with all the festive TV you can, and humbug to those who have an issue with it.

It’s a good thing, too, as Sony Christmas movies are playing non-stop classics until January, in a bid to keep that holiday spirit bubbling.

Although you might want to steer clear of The Holiday – because it’s not actually a festive film.

And the expert explained Christmas decorations also have the same effect, adding: ‘Christmas decorating will spike dopamine, a feel-good hormone [too].’

So get your tree out of the loft and chuck some tinsel on, ASAP.

But, when it comes to the holiday season, no one does it quite like the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey.

In fact, the All I Want For Christmas singer seriously goes all out for the big day – getting a 19ft tree in and heading off on an actual sleigh-ride in Aspen.

And we’re not jealous at all…

Lifting the lid on her Christmas plans, she told Cosmopolitan UK: ‘When I get off the plane, our drivers have All I Want For Christmas playing, we have hot cocoa and some butterscotch schnapps.

‘Then we’ll go through the woods on a two-horse open sleigh with blankets and real reindeer. It’s freezing cold but it’s beautiful and you’re looking at the stars. It’s an incredible moment I love every year.’

The mum-of-two goes a little more ‘low key’ with her decorations, only setting up two trees for the big day.

‘We do a tree in the bedroom, then I do a big tree in the living room with decorations I’ve had for years and years. Gold lights with off-white light, angels wearing white, and butterflies,’ she added.

‘We also do another tree in the family room area and call that the Charlie Brown tree. It’s a sad little tree we decorate with Polaroid pictures of ourselves and draw funny stuff on it. That one has the colourful lights that are old school.

‘Me and the kids do the little tree downstairs together, but decorating the big tree is really hard – it’s 19ft.’

We hope Santa brings us an invite next time…
