WATCH: Shocking moment toddler is swept along airport luggage conveyor belt

An airport trip for a young boy in the USA resulted in an unexpected adventure – and a fractured hand – after he was swept along by a luggage conveyor belt. A viral video has captured the moment the two-year-old escaped from his mother to investigate the belt at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. The child, named Lorenzo, wanders over and climbs on to the convoy belt just as a piece of luggage swings around. He is then swept away by the belt and disappears from view – just as his mother, Edith Vega, spots his whereabouts.

A compilation of footage from the airport follows the boy on his whirlwind escapade.

The child is seen zooming along through different areas of the luggage system.

Lorenzo tries to clamber away to safety – even climbing over suitcases – but is unable to do so as he is shipped along with the bags.

Eventually, he arrives into the luggage room where staff rush over to grab him off the conveyor belt.

His mother has spoken of how she noticed his disappearance. Vega had been printing her boarding pass when she spotted him on the conveyor belt.

“I just went blank,” she told US news channel WSB-TV. “I wanted to jump in and try to go get him but they didn’t allow me.

“I was just freaking out and I’m, like, ‘oh my goodness, I hope he’s okay. I hope he’s just enjoying the ride’.”

Vega said she was told by investigators that Lorenzo was on the belt for five minutes before he was rescued.

She said she was glad Lorenzo was alive – although the child did fracture his hand in the incident and was taken to hospital, US media reported.

Spirit Airlines told Fox News it was “working with TSA and airport officials.”

“Spirit Airlines is aware of an incident at Hartsfield-Jackson International in which an unattended child passed by a section of our ticket counter that was not staffed or open at the time,” a representative said.

“The child was able to access a back baggage area via a bag belt and sustained some injuries. We wish the child the best in their recovery.”

The incident comes two weeks after a female passenger in Istanbul Airport, Turkey mistakenly believed the luggage conveyor belt would take her directly through to the plane.

The very funny clip shows the passenger confidently striding past the check-in desk up onto the first baggage conveyor belt.

She then steps onto the main belt as an item of luggage glides by – apparently with no clue that she’s made a huge mistake.

However, she takes a dramatic tumble as she moves onto the baggage belt and falls over before staff approach to help her up.
