If BBC’s Dublin Murders isn’t enough to satiate your appetite for crime dramas, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a riveting new series in town – and fans are already raving about it.
Enter Giri/Haji, the gripping new thriller from the makers of Chernobyl set between London and Tokyo. A co-production between the BBC and Netflix, the thriller-drama (translated to Duty/Shame in English) follows detective Kenzo who sets out in search of his missing younger brother after they’re separated by a killing.
According to BBC’s synopsis, “Giri/Haji (Duty/Shame) is a soulful thriller that explores the butterfly effect of one murder across London and Tokyo, which sees Kenzo and Yuto, once devoted and now estranged brothers, driven to opposite sides of the world by the spiralling consequences of one violent split-second decision at the heart of the story.”
Bafta nominee Kelly Macdonald takes on the lead role of London-based Met Police detective Sarah, while Takehiro Hira stars as Tokyo-based detective Kenzo.
“I’m incredibly excited to see it come to life with such a diverse and brilliant cast and crew. They’re all ridiculously talented which has the added bonus of making me look better. Which was my goal all along, frankly,” said creator and screenwriter Joe Barton.
Fans are already hooked on the eight-part series which is readily available to stream on iPlayer with one fan writing: I’ve never seen anything like #GiriHaji It’s exquisite. Unique. Beautiful. Gripping. Bravo to all involved,” while another hailed it “Bold. Dark. Brave. Different.”
Between Dublin Murders and Girl/Haji, Tuesday nights have never looked juicier.
