Take a look at the worst ever Met Gala looks as stars prepare to strut their stuff on red carpet

The annual Met Gala has become a green light for celebs to pretty much wear whatever takes their fancy when they wake up that morning.

Some of the biggest stars on the planet work the red carpet in anything from leather jackets and jeans, beyond enormous fur trimmed cloaks, feather trimmed trains running 10 feet long or even pretty much nothing.

As stars prepare to once again dazzle crowds on the red carpet with their choice of evening wear, we’ve taken a look back at some outfits which didn’t quite hit the mark and left most of us jaw-dropped in bewilderment rather than adoration.

Amal Clooney

Amal was one of the Met Gala hosts in 2018 and so one of the first to walk the carpet. Unfortunately her outfit choice didn’t go down too well. George’s wife opted for a Richard Quinn design, featuring a corseted floral bodice and train over navy silk trousers.

But the slightly confused look divided fashion fans, with one writing on Twitter: “The met gala has barely began and I’m pretty sure Amal Clooney will win worst dressed.”

Kim Kardashian

It even covered her hands…

Kim Kardashian shocked everyone when she rocked up to the 2013 Met Gala in what became known as the ‘curtain dress’.

Despite actually being designed by Givenchy, and more than likely costing an eye-popping sum of money, Kim’s custom maternity dress left many of us tinting our head pondering whether it was actually a thing of sheer beauty, or a textile project gone hideously wrong.

When the world of social media clapped eyes on the floor length, flowered gown it was decided that actually it wasn’t that nice at all – with many people taking and uploading photos of similar patterned furniture around their home.

Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci later spoke about Kim’s outfit and said: “When you celebrate something, you give people flowers.”

Madonna

She was really working it with this pose

As well as making it onto the worst dressed list in 2017 for the second year running, Material Girl Madonna also made it onto the most outrageously dressed list.

Madge, 59, opted for a shocking camouflage dress complete with net train.

Not one to do things by halves on the Met Gala red carpet, she completed the look with a diamond encrusted grill and heavy gold chains.

Solange Knowles

Solange popped her head over the design

Solange Knowles sent tongues wagging when she opted for a dress in 2015 that we think anyone would struggle to actually like, even Solange herself.

Beyonce’s sister was never going to slip in through the back door after ‘attacking’ Jay Z in a lift the previous year, but she took things to a whole new level when it came to ensuring all eyes would be on her.

The bizarre design left poor old Solange struggling to even see where she was going as she awkwardly popped her head above the creation, designed by Giles Deacon.

Apparently inspired by a traditional Chinese fan, maybe it was actually chosen so Solange could hide away from any awkward questions about the previous year’s altercation with her brother-in-law.

Katy Perry

All kinds of wrong Katy

Whether it’s partying at Coachella or tottering down the most celebrity-trodden red carpet in the showbiz calendar – Katy Perry always likes to surprise when it comes to her outfit choices.

Sometimes wowing us all with her incredibly elegant looks and natural beauty or sometimes leaving us a bit baffled as to who told her it was OK to leave the house like that, you just never know when it comes to the Firework singer.

But, unfortunately Katy’s 2015 Met Gala outfit choice fell into the latter of the two, as she opted for a bizarre floor-length ball gown splattered with mock-graffiti.

Katy matched the Moschino gown with long gloves and looked as though she’d got dressed in the dark before picking up her spray can clutch bag. Eugh.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Look at that hat

These days, we’re used to seeing Sarah Jessica-Parker breezing around New York in some comfy jeans and boots alongside her incredibly cute twin girls.

But when it comes to taking a leaf out of her old character Carrie Bradshaw’s book, she ups the style stakes for the red carpet – sometimes getting it so so wrong.

One of those occasions was the 2015 Met Gala ball, when the 51-year-old beauty got it all kinds of wrong.

Forgetting about the flame-inspired hat (if that’s possible) for a moment, the falling poppies at the back of the dress looked a total mis-match to what was going on with the rest of the outfit.

Back to the hat ‘of sorts’, the Sex and the City star looked like she was playing the main role in an opera, rather than attending the biggest fashion gathering of the year.

Rihanna

Wow, just wow

Maybe Rihanna was worried the cameras would miss her on the night.

Surely that can be the only explanation for opting for such a loud and over-the-top dress as this bright yellow, fur-trimmed number.

Probably the most bold look the Met Gala has ever seen, Rihanna’s Chinese designed Guo Pei dress featured an enormous train, embellished with floral designs and bows.

Continuing the fur look up top, the Work singer’s off the shoulder dress showed us her ample cleavage and just a small hint of something pink underneath.

Obviously, the internet went wild with comparisons to what other things Rihanna’s yellow look resembled.

In a self-mocking Instagram post, the star seemed to agree that she may have looked a little bit like a cracked egg.

Miley Cyrus

Miley clearly ditched the underwear in favour of cut-out panels

The 2015 Met Gala saw Miley Cyrus keeping things relatively low-key compared to some of the crazy outfits we’ve become used to seeing her in.

But despite her attempt at the sleek look, Miley’s dress still didn’t quite seem to hit the mark, with a some oversized cut out panels showing us her tiny hips.

Miley matched the studded floor-length dress with a wet-look hair design, tinged slightly blue – not good.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga finished things off with a crown

It’s nothing new when Lady Gaga rock up to a red carpet wearing something distinctly crazy.

The kimono style gown featured silk, feathers, mesh and even a gothic looking crown to top things off.

Gaga attended the 2015 ball for the first time in five years, and flashed some serious cleavage at the cameras as she posed on the red carpet.

Clearly going for the theatrical look, Gaga finished off the outfit with some very angry looking eye-brows.
