Scots star Tom Walker bags BRITs Breakthrough award and promises boozy celebration


Scotland-born Tom Walker will likely be nursing a sore head tomorrow after being named Best Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards .

The Leave a Light On singer vowed to have a boozy celebration if he won his nomination.

Asked how he was going to mark his big achievement, Tom, 27, said: “By getting bang on it, mate.

“We are going to have a couple of beers. It’s the first day in ages where I’ve been drinking and had the next day off.”

The honour is sure to have gone down a storm in Cumbernauld , where Tom’s biggest fan – his 81-year-old gran Sadie, 81 – was watching on TV.

Tom’s big hit took off after being played on ITV’s Love Island, topping charts in 20 countries.

Calvin Harris also won big at the BRIT awards

He regards himself as both Scottish and Mancunian after being born north of the Border before being brought up down south.

Fellow Scot Calvin Harris also won big.

One Kiss – the Dumfries DJ’s collaboration with Dua Lipa – was named Best British Single.

Calvin, 35, also took the Brit for Best Producer.

The Scot performed One Kiss with Dua Lipa, 23, at the ceremony, along with a £77,000 giant dancing crab and an oriental dragon.

Hollywood star Hugh Jackman kicked off the awards bash with the Greatest Show from his hit musical The Greatest Showman.

He was flanked by 100 dancers dressed in capes and top hats before Jack Whitehall, who was host for the evening, popped out of a cake.

Singer George Ezra, 25, was named Best British Male, while Jorja Smith, 21, took Best British Female.

The big winners of the night were The 1975, who took home the prizes for Best Group and Best British Album.

The band, fronted by Denise Welch and Tim Healy’s son Matty, 29, performed their hit Sincerity Is Scary while walking along a travelator.

The moving walkway had broken down during rehearsals, holding up Outstanding Contribution to Music winner Pink’s run-through of her daredevil finale.

The singer, 39, hung from the rafters at London’s O2 Arena in a hoop and performed a medley of hits, finishing with What About Us.

International winners included Beyonce, 37, and Jay Z, 49, who recorded a video message to accept their award, as well as Ariana Grande, 25, and Drake, 32,

Ed Sheeran, 28, was given the Global Success Award.

Singer Anne-Marie, 27, got four nominations but walked away empty-handed.
