Ryanair strike: How much do Ryanair pilots earn? Is it as much as British Airways pilots?


Ryanair pilots based in the Republic of Ireland are to strike on Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 23. Members of the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA) voted heavily in favour of strike actions earlier this month, with as many as 94 percent supporting the walkout. The Ireland based pilots will join UK based Ryanair pilots, who will strike on August 22 to 23 and from September 2 to 4.

The pilots are striking over pay and conditions at the low-cost airline.

The High court will hear an application by Ryanair on Monday, August 19 aimed at securing an order preventing industrial action by some of its Irish based pilots.

Counsel for Ryanair also told the High Court the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) had not allowed a mediation process to be completed before serving the notice of strike action.

In addition, Ryanair cabin crew in Spain have planned 10 days of strikes in September.

Brian Strutton, BALPA’s general secretary said on Friday: “If they think they can legally bludgeon us and their pilots into submission they are wrong.”

How much do Ryanair pilots earn?

The salary of Ryanair pilots depends on a series of factors – such as the type of aircraft flown and length of service.

According to salary tracking website PayScale, the salary of a commercial pilot fly a jet at the company varies from £40,000 to £105,000 per year.

For a commercial pilot flying a corporate yet, however, the salary is slightly higher.

PayScale estimates the salary of those pilots goes up to between £41,000 and £143,000 per year.

Other estimates have said pilots who fly in and out of the biggest hubs can earn as much as £185,000 per year.

How much do British Airways pilots earn?

The average salary for a British Airways (BA) pilot is £88,347 per year, according to recruitment site Glassdoor.

However, as with Ryanair, the salary of pilots depends on the type of aircraft flown and length of service.

Glassdoor reports salaries range from £26,000 to £120,000 per year, but for international pilots the pay is as high as £168,000 per year.

According to the Aviation Job Search blog, BA is “one of the best airlines to fly for in terms of average salaries.”

It added: “Our calculations suggest that a long-haul pilot with lots of experience could well reach the £150,000 mark.”
