Ruth Langsford insists she will 'keep the smile on' amid the coronavirus pandemic

Ruth Langsford has vowed to ‘keep the smile on’ after she and husband Eamonn Holmes defended sitting close together on Friday’s episode of This Morning.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield have adhered to social distancing advice amid the coronavirus pandemic but Eamonn and Ruth, both 60, insisted they can still sit alongside each other as they live together.

Ruth told how she was going to ‘keep the smile on’ as she shared a clip of herself on Sunday morning and said she hoped her followers were all doing alright amid Britain’s ongoing lockdown.

Taking her dog for a walk, she said: ‘Morning! We’re out for our walk. Another beautiful day – look at that sky – but it’s very cold. Very cold today.

‘Anyway, hope you’re doing OK, staying safe, staying in just apart from your exercise. Speak soon.’

Ruth shared another snap of her dog yawning and encouraged people to keep their spirits up, writing: ‘Good morning, keep the smile on!’

It comes after Eamonn defended sitting closely to Ruth on This Morning as he revealed she has been feeling ‘really anxious’ amid the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Eamonn was quick to explain that as they are a married couple and live in the same household, they are allowed to sit in close proximity.

As the show kicked off, he told viewers: ‘In regards to social distancing, don’t bother phoning in and asking “why are these two sitting close together?”.

‘We are together, we live together. A lot of people think how could she have pulled him? But we even share a bed when I don’t fall asleep downstairs in the sofa.’

Ruth then added: ‘A lot of people think it’s a fake marriage… they think I’m punching!’

Eamonn then explained: ‘If it was me and Rochelle Humes we would be two metres apart.’

To which Ruth quipped: ‘Much to your disappointment… you’re stuck with me.’

As the couple later discussed the COVID-19, Eamonn then told how his wife has been feeling ‘anxious’ amid the pandemic.

He said: ‘A lot of people are very anxious. I’m looking at my wife, she’s a very anxious person.

‘I visibly watch her getting more and more anxious. She is addicted.’

Eamonn continued: ‘She puts on Piers Morgan and he scares the life out of her from 6am. I watch her face so anxious.’

It comes as the couple were forced to cancel Ruth’s 60th birthday celebrations last week over coronavirus fears.

The couple discussed their scuppered plans and Eamonn said: ‘We had a big week planned for your big birthday week, but because of coronavirus we have had to cancel it all.

‘I booked for us to go to Italy, so that was a mistake wasn’t it.

During her absence the previous week, Eamonn confirmed that Ruth wasn’t suffering from coronavirus when viewers questioned if she had come down with the virus.

The host went on to insist that people stay indoors and watch the morning TV show, while Ruth said she hoped the couple would bring them some ‘light relief’.

Although Ruth’s trip to Italy was cancelled due to the pandemic, she was still treated to a performance of Happy Birthday by The Shires as a surprise from Eamonn.
