Pound to euro exchange rate: Sterling now 'vulnerable to negative Brexit headlines'

The pound toeuro exchange rate has remained flat. The lack of movement follows a dearth of data and major headlines yesterday. However,Brexit continues to serve as a barometer for GBP’s shifts. News on the UK’s divorce from the UK makes sterling “vulnerable.” Pressure is currently mounting on Prime Minister Theresa May to come up with a Brexit plan and Tories are expected to hold further discussions today on whether to change the party rules to enable an early leadership challenge.

The pound is currently trading at €1.153 against the euro, according to Bloomberg at the time of writing.

Michael Brown, currency expert at Caxton FX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.

“Sterling trod water against the euro on Tuesday as a lack of economic data or impactful news headlines gave markets little food for thought.

“The pound, however, remains vulnerable to negative Brexit headlines, especially those relating to ongoing cross-party talks, with continued downward pressure on the pound likely should discussions fail to yield a successful outcome.”

Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX added: “As the end of April approaches and Brexit discussions rumble on, the pound has been left treading water.

“With no real catalysts for movement GBP/EUR has spent the last week trading between €1.157 and €1.152.

“UK public finance figures are unlikely to have much impact today unless they surprise significantly.”

For holidaymakers looking to save money when booking a holiday, CEO David Baddeley shared his top tip.

You should shop for a holiday as usual and select the one that you would like to purchase.

“Then complete the stages as usual. Dates, flight selection etc and enter your email address,” Baddeley told Express.co.uk.

“When it is time to offer you payment details close all windows and do not revisit the site.”

“Many sites will then send you a voucher code in the next 24 hours to redeem against your holiday.

“This can discount your holiday by a significant amount, especially if the offer is to redeem a percentage.”

Skyscanner has also revealed the cheapest long haul flights currently available.

Austin, the state capital of Texas, tops the charts with a 33 per cent drop in prices year on year.

The average flight price adult economy return ticket to Austin is £513.56, according to Skyscanner, reducing costs by £248. The price slash could save a family of four nearly £1,000 on their holiday.

Seattle, Washington and Denver, Colorado, came joint second in the list of top 10. Both US cities saw an 18 per cent drop in average flight prices. A Seattle return ticket has a price saving of £114 and the same to Denver, a saving of £110.

Lisa Tyndall, Senior Growth Manager at Skyscanner said: “With the interest in long-haul travel soaring we went through our extensive flight data to find out which further-afield destinations are offering the best value for money based on a drop in average flight prices.

“If a traveller’s dream destination isn’t listed in our top ten value destinations, there are many flight tips available to help travellers find the best flight deals, for example, setting price alerts, considering departing from a different airport nearby and just changing their departure day slightly can all help save money.”
