Phoebe Waller-Bride shocked viewers at the Critics’ Choice Awards last night as she delivered a foul-mouthed acceptance speech and thanked JLo for being a source of inspiration.
Phoebe led the triumphant Brits with three awards for Fleabag at the awards in LA on Sunday before giving a very X-rated speech.
Accepting the award for best comedy series, the Fleabag star and creator, 34, had lost her voice and said her busy week had given her a “really sexy voice”.
Big chunks of her speech had to be bleeped out due to her swearwords, but the 34-year-old said the show was “one of the best experiences I’ve probably ever had working on this show”, which was “a show about a very lonely woman which had landed her a load of friends”.
She said: “If I ever imagined in a million years I’d get up here, getting things like this for writing a character who literally looks at the camera and says ‘f**k me up the a**’.”
The Fleabag creator then went on to thank a very surprising source of inspiration for the show – none other than Jennifer Lopez.
“Somebody inspired this show in a way she’ll never know and that’s JLo,” Waller-Bridge announced.
She credited the mega star with inspiring Andrew Scott’s “hot priest” in the show.
“I’d decided that the hot priest’s favourite song was Jenny From The Block and that really opened the whole thing up for me.”
JLo was sat in the audience for the star-studded ceremony held in the Barker hangar in the LA seaside city of Santa Monica.
Shocked fans thought Phoebe’s speech was hilarious, with one writing on Twitter : ‘Phoebe Waller-Bridge just said “f**k me up the a*s”, live, in the CW, at what? Is it 5pm PST right now? GIVE HER ANOTHER AWARD.’
Another wrote: “Phoebe Waller-Bridge for world domination.”
And a third said: “Wow. no words.”
