Northern Lights in the UK: Can you see the stunning aurora borealis from home this winter?

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are an array of stunning hues seen shimmering across the sky.

They are caused by charged solar particles interacting with the Earth’s magnetic fields.

At the magnetic North and South Pole, these particles collide with gas particles, causing the hues of glowing pinks and greens.

While mostly characterised by these colours, they also have been known to produce vibrant shared of blue, violet, yellow and even red.

Due to their polar locations, the lights are most likely to be seen in the northernmost parts of the world.

Luckily, UK residents have been known to spot the illuminations in the upper parts of England and Scotland.

Every now and then, though, something magical happens and resides as far south as Kent has enjoyed a show.
