NCIS' wardrobe department confesses Gibbs copied signature look from guest star

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from NCIS.

NCISGibbs copied his style from another in the drama, according to the wardrobe department.

Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) was at the epicentre of the police procedural for 19 seasons until he made his exit in 2021.

During his stint on the CBS drama, Gibbs had a very specific look that fans grew accustomed to: a sport coat, paired with a polo shirt and a white T-shirt underneath.

For almost every episode of NCIS, Gibbs adopted this style and was rarely seen in any other attire.

However, according to the costume supervisor on the show, Rachel Good, the veteran agent wasn’t the first one to showcase this look.

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video about the fashion on NCIS, Good explained: “Gibbs always wears a white T-shirt because he’s an ex-Marine.

“When the show started, we thought what better way to establish the fact he was an ex-Marine than by this white T-shirt? He always wears it, it’s his signature.

“If I’m not mistaken, I believe Gibbs noticed this look on a fellow co-worker McCallister.

“McCallister was seen in an episode back in the day wearing a polo and a sport coat and we like to think that Gibbs emulated this look.”

Riley McCallister (Michael O’Neill) was a retired NCIS special agent who was later discovered to be the head of a conspiracy against NCIS director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll).

But in a clip shown on the behind-the-scenes video, Gibbs, who is dressed in a formal shirt and tie, is looking at McCallister wearing what would become his everyday ensemble.

So while McCallister caused a lot of problems for the team’s director, he did perhaps inspire Gibbs’ fashion sense for years to come.

While Gibbs is no longer in the drama, NCIS continues to thrive on CBS.

Earlier this month, the network renewed the mothership for a 22nd series which is expected to air sometime in the autumn.

But it isn’t all good news as the show’s third spin-off, NCIS Hawaii, has been cancelled after just three seasons.

A petition, which has more than 10,000 signatures, has been set up in a bid to get the network to change its mind about NCIS Hawaii’s future.

NCIS is available to watch on CBS.
