Mexican singer Jose Jose has died aged 71.

Jose (real name Jose Romulo Sosa Ortiz) passed away on Saturday (28 September) in Miami, following a battle with cancer.

His death was confirmed in a statement released by Mexico’s Culture Ministry, according to Reuters, in which they described the star as ‘one of Mexico’s most loved voices.’

Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said: ‘It is sad, his passing.’

Jose was a huge presence in Latin American music and received nine Grammy nominations during his 50-year long career, along with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He was also the recipient of the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year in 2005 and the Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Jose sold two million copies of his album, titled Secrets, back in the 1980s and boasts a total of 95million record sales worldwide.

Jose, also known as The Prince of Song, was best known for Latino hits such as El Triste.

While his cause of death is yet to be confirmed, multiple reports suggest the singer died following complications from his treatment for pancreatic cancer.

He first announced his diagnosis two years ago via a recorded message he shared to YouTube.

Jose told fans in the video: ‘I want to be the one to inform you guys what is happening in my life and career, like I have been doing all my life.’

Jose is survived by his third wife Sara Salazar and his three children; son Jose Francisco (know as Jose Joel) and daughters Marysol and Sarita.
