KEEPING Faith fans were reintroduced to the eerie goings on in rural Wales last week as the popular crime drama returned to our screens.
Many of the unanswered questions from the end of season one were addressed, but others were raised as the action picked up 18 months after Faith (Eve Myles) was reunited with her missing husband Evan…
1) Evan’s serving time
The father-of-three is nearly halfway into his four year prison sentence for converting £250,000 of criminal property for the fearsome Glynn family.
We learn he handed himself into police after an emotional reunion with Faith at their family home.
The judge gave him credit for working as a police informant and giving evidence at trial but it seems almost certain he’ll remain behind bars for the rest of the series.
Despite a brutal first encounter that saw Faith headbutt her husband and call him a “b*****d”, it appears the pair will have a future together. They had a tense face to face during a prison visit, with Faith clearly reluctant to forget the past.
But later in a bathroom chat she says she has no interest in finding love again, hinting she’ll wait for Evan’s release.
2) Defending Madlen Vaughan
William Vaughan, a client of the Howells’ law firm, was found shot dead in a field with the finger of suspicion pointing at his wife Madlen.
Having fallen victim to police corruption in season one and coming close to being sentenced for the murder of Evan while he was missing, Faith is adamant Madlen is innocent.
Her father-in-law Tom is desperate for her to drop the case, claiming it will disgrace the firm if they’re seen defending a client’s alleged murderer.
Things don’t look good for Madlen after fingerprints are found on the murder weapon, its cabinet and key.
In emotional final scenes, distraught Madlen begs Faith for help while in the dock as the solicitor struggles to take a back seat.
However, it seems likely Faith will play a major role in determining Madlen’s fate.
3) Crime boss Gael Reardon won’t go away
Faith has been carrying out dodgy work for the Irish mob boss in a bid to clear the £120,000 debt she owed after love interest Steve Baldini used the funds from sales to pay for a hit job on Gael.
Early in the episode we see Faith trade envelopes with a man who we can presume has been blackmailed by the Reardons.
As he walks off, he says: “You people make me sick.”
Faith meets with Gael in an empty building site and, after declaring she wants out, is told: “120 grand is a big debt. Just running a few errands doesn’t begin to cover it.”
She’s then told that if she can broker a good deal between Gael and a struggling energy firm she can walk away.
4) Steve Baldini’s back
Season one ended with Steve and Faith sharing a passionate kiss at the very moment Evan reappeared with their three children.
Steve went all out to rescue Faith from the murky underworld she’d been plunged into and was completely smitten.
He still appears to be casting a protective eye over Faith, watching her meet with Gael from afar.
Faith briefly comes face to face with him again in an awkward encounter as their daughters play together on a swing.
The only words he says: “Faith, it’s been a while. Look after yourself,” suggests Evan’s shock reappearance caused irreparable damage.
5) Can DI Susan Williams be trusted?
Season one was dominated by police corruption, and while DI Williams wasn’t working with the crime syndicates, she did try and frame Faith for the death of dentist wrapped up in criminal activity.
Williams planted Faith’s earring at the scene of a crash she caused, having accidentally caused the dentist to swerve off the road.
She later had Faith to thank after she deleted a recording that placed the bent cop at the scene.
The policewoman tormented Faith throughout the series, pushing for her children to be taken away by social services and relentlessly hounding Faith over Evan’s ‘murder’.
In episode one there’s clearly still tension in the air between the pair, as they cross paths over the arrest and charging of Madlen Vaughan.
However, there’s a hint Williams has found a conscience as she lends Madlen her mobile to make a call from her cell, but does she have an ulterior motive?
6) The mysterious energy firm
We learn that an energy firm owes the Howells firm £32,000 in fees, which Tom as a friend of the client doesn’t seem keen to chase up.
Gael Reardon expresses an interest in buying the company and will let Faith walk away if she can broker a good deal.
She explains this to Tom who makes an initial approach, but the company’s £6million valuation is way above the £2million Gael wants to pay.
It remains to be seen what uses Gael will have for the company and what impact this will have on Tom and the law firm.
7) What’s Cerys up to?
Cerys proved a useful ally for Faith in season one, but a brief mysterious meeting with a contact called Anya in episode one of season two has raised suspicion.
Keen to keep the meeting discreet and reassuring her contact it is separate to her work at the law firm, Cerys proposes a business deal from a client who owns a hotel on the coast and wants to transform it into a spa resort for the eye watering sum of £3.2million.
Insisting everything has been perfectly planned, she adds: “Our fee comes from the architect and project management lines… 25K each.”
Will the proposal be linked to the energy firm of the Reardons?
8) What’s Faith’s connection to DI Laurence Breeze?
Faith’s track record with police officers is poor to say the least, having had dealings with plenty rotten apples.
In her first encounter with new cop DI Laurence Breeze, she hints at a frosty past when she snipes: “We’ve met before,” after being introduced.
She then makes a dig at his secondment from Scotland Yard.
We’ll possibly learn more through flashbacks as the season progresses.
