Kate Winslet hated 'curvy' label and feared bum looked big in Contagion body bag

Kate Winslet is proud of her “wrinkles and crunkles”, declaring: “When you’re a woman, at a certain point you have to choose between your arse and your face.”

The actress resented being labelled “curvy Kate” in her 20s, saying: “People would talk about me like I was different, because I was slightly bigger than average. I was a size six.”

In the 90s, Hollywood was “completely riddled with very slender women in a way that was not entirely balanced”, Kate says, but feels it now celebrates real women more.

She “values and appreciates” being able to look natural as a palaeontologist in new film Ammonite, saying: “I feel very proud of my 45-year-old self.

“I’ve had three children, I am who I am, this is a different physical me to the one I was in my early 20s. The way my face is now, the wrinkles and crunkles… I’m proud of those things.”

Speaking to the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Kate credits starring in 2011 film Contagion with helping her deal with the pandemic.

But she worried how she looked in one Contagion scene, laughing: “I get slung into a ditch in a body bag. Almost every take, I’d open one eye and say, ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ Stupid, typically vain nonsense.”

Ammonite is scheduled for release in the UK on March 26, 2021.
