Jose Mourinho hits back at Arsenal over Facebook post – 'We will be waiting for them'

Jose Mourinho has warned mickey-taking rivals Arsenal – we will be waiting for you. The Tottenham manager was annoyed at the Gunners’ social media team poking fun at his side after their limp 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United on Thursday. Immediately after the game, the Arsenal on their Facebook page uploaded the message: “Here’s a reminder of how it’s done” – with highlights of Arenal’s 2-1 wn at Bramall Lane in the FA Cup.

The defeat by United put huge dent in Tottenham’s Champions League qualification hopes – and Mourinho, whose team meet Everton on Monday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, was not amused.

The Portuguese – whose side face their bitter North London rivals on Sunday July 12 – hit back: “No problem – at home we will be waiting for them.

“I think if they were top of the League or fighting for top four and in a really good moment they wouldn’t enjoy the problems of the others.

“You only enjoy the problems of the others when you are also in trouble. So I think in the end it’s more about that.

“Arsenal don’t have much to celebrate – so they have to take any opportunity to do this. They are in a very similar situation to what we are in the table.

“I don’t believe it was Mikel Arteta who posted it – probably it was some guy who has been working from home for three months.”

The Spurs chief, whose side go into tonight’s game four points and two places behind their rivals, added: “To be the Champions of North London means nothing to me. You must be bigger than that and have more ambition than that.

“I have been at so many different big clubs, with so many special rivals, so I don’t hide that for me Arsenal is a very special rival. So yes, I would like to finish in a better position than them. But I want my team to be bigger than that. I want my club to feel bigger than that.”

Mourinho though is still smarting after the Blades defeat – and insisted that Tottenham’s limp away form has to improve if the team are to fight for honours. The Tottenham manager said: “For some reason for a couple of years, the team is showing, especially away from home, weaknesses at this level.

“There are reasons for that – but. I am waiting for the next match with similarities to the Sheffield game – because the boys can show a different face.”

Spurs have won only three times on the road in the league this season – all of them since Mourinho arrived in November. Last term under Mauricio Pochettino, they actually won 11, but the Portuguese insisted: “Away from home, you go to the records and you realise that the results have been really, really bad. The fact that there were no fans at Sheffield adds even more to my disappointment, because there is not the natural supporting habitat the home team has.”
