Jetstar flight seconds from disaster as pilot FORGOT to lower the wheels as he was coming in to land

TWO Jetstar pilots narrowly avoided disaster after they forgot to lower the wheels of a flight just 4km from the runway following an emergency alarm.

The crew were forced to abort two attempts at landing at an airport in Australia due to a “series of distractions” according to a report.

Flight VH-VQ was travelling from Sydney to Ballina last May when the incident took place.

Shortly before landing, the pilot noticed the plane was not in the correct position, forcing him to order a “go-around”.

After aborting the attempt and trying for a second time, they were then alerted to an issue with the landing gear not being deployed.

This was because crew didn’t follow the correct procedure and the wheels were in the incorrect position.

They then made a successful landing on the third try.

According to a report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, “a series of distractions” were to blame for the two failed landings.

The report explains, according to 7News: “During the downwind leg following the first go-around, the flight crew did not select the landing gear down as they had commenced the configuration sequence for landing at the Flaps 3 setting.

“Furthermore the flight crew incorrectly actioned the landing checklist, which prevented the incorrect configuration for landing being identified and corrected.”

No-one was injured and the plane landed safely at the airport.

Jetstar have given the pilots and crew “additional training” following the incident.
