Spain has seen a spike in coronavirus cases which has resulted in having the highest cases in Europe behind the UK.

Active cases remain at 129,072, with a spike of 5,764 new cases on August 4.

Jet2 explained in their statement: “As the government has not changed its advice regarding travel to the Balearic and Canary Islands from the UK, we have taken the decision to suspend flights and holidays to the Balearic and Canary Islands up to and including 15th August.

“Because of the uncertainty caused by the government’s blanket ban approach when it comes to travelling to these destinations, we have staggered start dates and will be making some additional adjustments to our flying programmes, meaning that some flights on and beyond this date may be cancelled.”

They added that anyone who will be affected will be contacted, with them able to rebook for free, or receive a credit note or cash refund.

Anyone travelling after this date hasn’t been affected, although are likely to be if the ban continues.

Brits were given just four hours notice after the UK government announced the Spanish travel ban on July 26, which would also result in a two-week quarantine back in England.

Frantic travellers were told by Jet2 to cut their holidays short or risk having to pay for new return flights home.

The islands were included in the ban from July 27, despite tourism ministers claiming it was unfair as cases remained low in the holiday hotspots.

Despite pressure from Spanish tourism bosses and politicians, a No10 spokesperson said they were “not aware of any changes” to the travel quarantine that would happen regionally.

They added: “There were some challenges in trying to look at this on a regionalised basis. We have made the decision based on looking closely at the data.”

JET2 has also cancelled all flights and holidays to Cyprus until August 17.

The airline said it has “no choice” but to suspend trips to Larnaca and Paphos after new coronavirus restrictions were slapped on the country.

TUI are offering to pay for all travel and medical costs for any tourists who catch coronavirus on holiday.
