Artistic Pursuits at Roedean School for Years 7 to 9

Roedean’s Art Department sees girls create a huge range of diverse works. Students in Years 7 to 9 experiment with a host of art, craft, and design mediums. They learn to draw, paint, and sculpt, amongst other creative skills.

On a theoretical level, they learn about some of the world’s greatest designers, artists, and craft makers. They also explore the historical and cultural development of art.

Artistic Pursuits at Roedean School for GCSE and A Level Students

At GCSE, girls become proficient in several creative arts. These include fashion design, textiles, three-dimensional media, printmaking, sculpture, and lens-based media.

At A Level, Roedean’s Art Department offers various courses that prepare students for higher-education arts courses and careers. Girls can study Art, Photography, and Textiles A Levels or a Foundation Art, Design, and Media BTEC.

Roedean’s art students pursue exciting careers in several destinations, working in fields like architecture, product design, and fashion.

Additional Offerings for Art Lovers

Outside curricular lessons, girls can dedicate even more time to their favourite arts in Roedean’s clubs and supra-curricular offerings. These offerings include workshops, courses, life-drawing classes, and trips. Each gives girls the opportunity to explore their ideas through traditional and new media.

2023 trips that the Art Department has hosted include visits to Barcelona, the Tate Modern, Charleston House, and the bip-Art printmaking studio in Brighton.

Betty’s Roedean Art Success Story

One alumna, Betty, studied the Art and Architecture foundation course at Roedean. On this course, she enjoyed completing design tasks and solving problems that helped her develop skills in a range of artistic areas.

Betty has commended the Art Department for always supporting her interests, exposing her to several materials and techniques, and guiding her through her studies. Passionate about creating 3D models, she went on from Roedean to study architecture at university.

Megan’s Roedean Art Success Story

Another alumna, Megan, achieved impressive results in her Art and other A Levels (A*AAA), not to mention an A* in her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Excelling in many fields, Megan chose to pursue Product and Industrial Design at Central St Martin’s University of the Arts in London. This university often receives the number-one worldwide ranking for creative arts courses.

Megan is one of the numerous students at Roedean who secure exceptional exam results and go on to study at their top-choice universities.
