Heathrow strike latest news update: BREAKING strike is OFF tomorrow

The Heathrow airport strike for tomorrow has been called off, but there are strikes to come that have yet to be addressed.

Broadcast Journalist for @bbcbusiness Adrian Bradley tweeted the news.

He wrote: “Breaking: Heathrow strike is off tomorrow. The Unite Union and Airport have reached a deal.”

This will be good news for travellers whose plans at the busiest time of the year for holidays will not be disturbed.

Heathrow Airport wrote: “Unite has chosen to postpone their strike action on Tuesday 6th August. We regret that passengers may have been inconvenienced by this change.

“Strike action on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th August is still scheduled to go ahead.”

Further information on their website read: “We’d like to reassure you that the airport will continue to operate on these days as we put contingency plans in place. In the meantime, Heathrow remains committed to finding a solution with Unite to avoid further strike action.

“Whilst most flights will operate as scheduled, to ensure your comfort, safety and security during this time, we are working with our airline partners to consolidate and reduce the number of flights operating during the strike period. Unfortunately, this does mean that some passengers will be moved onto different flights by their airlines.

“This is a difficult time for Heathrow, our airline partners, and above all our passengers, as the proposed strike action has been unreasonably designed to impact passengers taking well-deserved holidays. We apologise for any disruption to your journey, and appreciate your patience during this time.

“If you are due to travel on one of the proposed strike days, your airline will be able to confirm the status of your flight.”

The Heathrow airport strike has been called over pay for pilots.

The Workers’ union Unite announced today that members had overwhelmingly rejected a revised pay offer from the airport by 88 per cent.

According to Unite: “The dispute comes amid deepening anger over pay disparities between workers doing the same job at the airport and the ‘massive’ pay package of Heathrow Airport’s chief executive officer John Holland-Kaye.

“Last year the Heathrow boss received a 103.2 per cent pay increase with his basic remuneration package rising from £2.097 million in 2017 to £4.2 million in 2018.

“It takes Mr Holland-Kaye around two days to earn what some of the lowest-paid Heathrow workers earn in a year.”

A British Airways pilot strike has also been called over pay.

The salary of pilots depends on the type of aircraft flown and the length of service.

According to job and recruitment site Glassdoor, the average salary for a BA pilot is £88,347 per year.

These range from £26,000 to £120,000 per year, but jumps to up to £168,000 per year for international pilots.

According to the Aviation Job Search blog, BA is “one of the best airlines to fly for in terms of average salaries.”
