Flight tips: Experts reveal how to sleep on long haul flights – always choose this seat

Long haul flights are rarely comfortable, and many travellers dread them.

While some people manage to drift of rather easily on a long flight, many really struggle.

This can make their experience less enjoyable, mean they are tired on arrival and may have trouble adjusting to their new timezone.

However, a few online travel experts have given their tips to help others sleep.

Of the frequent flyers on Reddit offering their tips, one was the most frequent.

They suggested those looking to fly picked one particular seat. While many might plump for the window seat, these internet users said the aisle seat was by far the best bet for sleeping on long haul flights.

One wrote: “I get my ticket asap, request an aisle if possible.”

Another said: “Honestly I just care about having an aisle seat and enough water for the duration of the trip.”

So why are these travellers so fond on the aisle seat?

One explained: “I make sure I sit in an aisle seat so I don’t have to bother other seatmates about getting up to go to the bathroom or to stretch my legs.”

Anxiety over disturbing others to go to the toilet may well prevent comfy sleep.

“Aisle seat, headphones, some sort of music playback device, and a thick book,” one Reddit user added, “also, eat something before departing.”

Another suggest checking in early to book the seat that you want, regardless of where it is.

They said: “Also, figure out what seat you like (aisle, window, emergency exit row, etc) and take advantage of the advance check-in they let you do now and pick a good seat.”

Other travel tips extend beyond your experience just on the flight.

Various hand luggage tips could make your travels much easier too.

Lois Robertson, Brand Manager at London Stansted Airport, spoke to Express.co.uk about her top tips.

“To roll or to fold? That is the question,” Robertson said. “The general consensus by most experts is to do a mixture of both.

“We recommend rolling tops and folding trousers to ensure that your delicate items don’t get creased.
