Beyonce tested for breast cancer gene after her dad Mathew Knowles’ shock diagnosis

BEYONCE was tested for the breast cancer gene after her dad Mathew’s shock diagnosis, he revealed on Wednesday.

The 67-year-old music manager told Good Morning America that his family were the first people he called, because he was concerned they were at a higher genetic risk of the condition once he found out that he carried the mutated BRCA2 gene.

“The first call was to my family,” the music manager said of his shock diagnosis, “that was the very first call”.

“Because this is genetics.

“It means my kids have a higher chance –  a higher risk.

“It also means my grandkids are a high risk,” he told interviewer Michael Strahan.

“They handled it like they should. They went and got the test.”

He explained that his daughters, Beyonce and Solange, went immediately to get tested themselves because of the increased genetic risk.

Knowles, who managed Destiny’s Child, says that he first knew something was wrong when he noticed a small recurring dot of blood on his shirts.

When he mentioned it to his wife, she said she had noticed a drop of blood on their bedsheets, so he immediately went to the doctor.

“When I had blood on my T-shirt, I didn’t immediately think it was breast cancer. My mind went to a lot of places,” he explained.

But a mammogram confirmed that it was breast cancer, which is rare in men – with only 2000-3000 cases per year in the United States.

The music manager and father of four had surgery at the end of July and is on the road to recovery, but he explained that it’s changed his perspective on the world.

“I stopped drinking. I wanted to just have a clean bill of health. Exercise. Meditate.

“Things that used to be important to me aren’t important now. I just look at the world differently,” he told GMA.

Knowles explained that he carries an hereditary risk.

“I have the BRCA2 [gene] that’s mutated,” he said.

“For the rest of my life I have to be very much aware and conscious. And do all of the early detection. Constant mammograms. Constant prostate exams. Constant MRI. For the rest of my life,” he told Strahan.

Knowles managed Destiny’s Child and Beyonce’s solo career, as well as Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams when they went solo.

He divorced Beyonce’s mum Tina in 2011 after 30 years of marriage, and shares daughters Beyonce and Solange with his ex-wife.

The music manager also shares daughter Koi and son Nixon with current wife Gena Avery.
