Aberdeen teen seeks to emulate local heroes Annie Lennox and Emeli Sande on The Voice Kids

Scots teenager Aiysha Russell hopes she’s a knockout on The Voice Kids tonight.

The 13-year-old, from Drumoak in Aberdeenshire, boxes but admits music is her real passion. She said: “I started boxing last year on a recommendation from another singer friend.

“I love the sessions but it’s just for fitness, not fighting. My real passion is music, singing and songwriting.

“Boxing is a great way to get rid of anything that is bottled up.”

While Aiysha has been singing since she was nine, this is the first time she has been on TV.

She said: “I was nervous before I went on. The stage is beautiful but it’s huge.”

Aiysha sang What a Difference A Day Makes, by Dinah Washington, and was hoping Jessie J was going to turn round for her.

Aiysha loves jazz singers like Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James as well as modern soul singers like Emeli Sande, who comes from nearby Alford in Aberdeenshire. She said: “I love Emeli’s sound and her style.

“Also Annie Lennox, another Aberdeen legend.”

Spanish-born Aiysha was supported at the audition by her mum Michelle, gran Morag and grandad Graham.
