Woman shows controversial way to cut cake and says we've been doing it 'wrong'

If you’ve been cutting cakes into triangular pieces like pretty much every other person on the planet, you’ve been doing it wrong your entire life – apparently.

One mum thought she had finally mastered the art when she showed off her secret technique using a simple pair of food tongs.

Flipping them round, she pushed the tongs into the cake to create the perfect triangle, which even provided a handle to lift the slice out.

But now we’re being told triangles aren’t the way to go at all, after a video uploaded to TikTok racked up more than 3.7 million views.

It gave the message: “Sorry to break it to you, but you’ve been cutting cakes wrong your entire lives. Here’s the mathematically correct way to do it.”

It really divided opinion in the comments

She says rather than slicing at an angle to create the triangles we are all so used to, you should begin by cutting the cake completely in half.

Then make four marks across each half to make it easy to divide into eight equal sections. You can see how it’s done in the video above.

She states: “You’ll then be able to cut eight even pieces from each side of the cake instead of guessing at how big the wedges are going to be.

“This trick is used by wedding planners to get the most out of wedding cakes and has been proved by mathematicians as the right way to do it.”

The well-intentioned video received a lot of flack in the comments as one person questioned if it worked at all, replying: “But your slices were all different slices?”

A second wrote: “Don’t put math and cake in the same sentence ever again.”

Another commented: “Baker here. That’s not how we do it.”

However another argued: “Absolutely correct!! So glad to see this! My parents owned a bakery and my mum would always include these instructions with each cake!”
