The family of a woman killed by sharks while on holiday in the Bahamas have revealed how the creatures tore off one of her arms before her mum tried to save her.

Jordan Lindsey, a 21-year-old student at Los Angeles’ Loyola Marymount University, was swimming in a roped off snorkelling area off the coast of Rose Island when she was suddenly attacked by two sharks.

The family had decided to take last minute excursions during the third day of their holiday and split up, with Jordan and her mother Kami heading to snorkel as her father Michael went to pet pigs.

However the mother-daughter trip soon turned to tragedy when one shark attacked her arm before another shark latched onto Jordan’s leg.

Michael and her girlfriend Gianna Gabrielle-Kasparek have spoken out about her final moments as her mother tried to rescue the student.

Michael said: ‘Kami said she heard Jordan yell, ‘mom,’ and then Kami looked back and her first thing was she thought dolphins were around Jordan.’

Kami quickly realised her daughter was screaming for help and began swimming to her daughter, calling her to swim closer.

Michael said: ‘Jordan is not swimming so good and then Kami realised the first shark took most of her right arm off.’

Kami was able to reach her daughter and began dragging her away as a second shark attacked.

The mum tried to fight the shark, hitting it on the nose to protect her daughter but sadly nothing worked.

Michael continued: ‘They’re swimming slowly and Jordan said, ‘Mom, there’s another shark coming,’ and then it just hit the second shark hit again like on her lower leg and just took a giant chunk out of her and then that’s the last thing Jordan said.’

Despite the second attack, Kami was able to haul her daughter out of the water and onto a rocky ledge where the boat collected them to take them to shore.

As the boat took the pair to shore Jordan was still alive and was met by an ambulance back on the mainland.

However, by the time Michael had discovered what was happening and made it to Nassu Hospital, Jordan had died.

He said: ‘I just kissed her on the forehead and said, see you later, Jordan.

‘[Kami] saw her poor daughter die in her arms and it’s just, it’s crazy. Kami doesn’t like the nights because once she closes her eyes she’s back in that water again.’

In a statement last month the Lindsay family said there was no safety equipment on the boat.

The statement continued: ‘There was no medical attention provided to Jordan. They had no first aid kit, no basic supplies for any type of injury.

‘A towel was used to cover Jordan’s injured legs.’
