With Less on the Line, LCS Twitch Viewership Falls in Final Week

Viewership for the final week of the League of Legends Championship Series Database-Link-e1521645463907 Spring Split was down from the same weekend last year due to a reduced number of tiebreaker matches to determine which teams made the spring playoffs.

During the 2018 Spring Split the LCS had five tiebreakers to be played following the league’s nine-week schedule. The top two seeds in the LCS’s six-team playoff had the same record and the remaining four teams in the playoffs also shared a record necessitating a plethora of tiebreaker matches.

While three tiebreakers were played on Sunday. Two were played the Monday after. This year only one tie needed to be broken to determine seeding and the playoff picture for the Spring Split was much clearer.

A lack of hype surrounding the final week due to a playoff picture that provided more clarity led the LCS to an averaging 105K concurrent viewers for live coverage on Riot Games’ Database-Link-e1521645463907 main Twitch Database-Link-e1521645463907 channel, down from 117K CCV for Saturday and Sunday coverage last year. The total hours watched total of 1.37M for live coverage was also down from last year’s total (1.89M on Saturday and Sunday).

Because the LoL European Championship Database-Link-e1521645463907 regular season Spring Split started one week before the LCS this year, it concluded last week, leaving just LCS action on the Riot Games channel for the weekend resulting in lower overall figures. From March 22-25 the channel accumulated 1.5M hours watched with an average of 59K CCV. This included peripheral coverage to the live matches played on Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend’s peak viewership of 210.6K CCV came during Team SoloMid’s Database-Link-e1521645463907 win against Team Liquid Database-Link-e1521645463907. Both teams made the playoffs for the Spring Split and ended the regular season as two of only three teams to achieve a double-digit win total.
