Theresa May’s favourite whisky-maker has switched to producing hand sanitiser for the NHS front line battling coronavirus.
The former Prime Minister once declared her top festive tipple was Penderyn whisky, distilled in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.
She said in 2017: “My favourite Christmas drink will be a glass of a Welsh whisky called Penderyn, which I’ll enjoy on those (hopefully) quiet winter evenings over the holidays.”
Now, the company has overhauled its operation so it can produce vital alcohol wash to help protect from Covid-19.
The Penderyn Hand Sanitiser is made according to a widely-accepted formula from the World Health Organisation and has been approved for use by the NHS in Wales.
Penderyn’s chief executive Stephen Davies said: “We never imagined that our single malt spirit would be used in this way but we are pleased that most of the sanitising products will be used by the NHS in Wales.”
Wales’ Economy Minister Ken Skates said: “Penderyn is a fantastic example of a business stepping up and adapting the way it works to support our efforts in beating coronavirus.
“Our NHS stars are performing life saving acts of heroism each and every day and as Welsh Government working together with businesses such as Penderyn, we are doing all that we can to protect our health service and provide them with what they need.”
