Jake Uskoski was small for his age, stood out for having long hair and got bullied in middle school. “I could count on one hand the number of friends I had,” he said.

When his older brother, Nick, went to Europe for a student exchange program, he suggested keeping in touch with Jake through online multiplayer videogames. It became a haven for Jake, where he could stay connected to his brother and make friends with other kids. At times he would lie to his parents about how late he was staying up to play.
