Wheeler Dealers Mike Brewer on vital used car tip for 'less than a tank of fuel’

Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer has warned used or classic car buyers can protect themselves from “getting their fingers burned” and securing a dodgy vehicle by following a simple tip.

The TV host said getting the car independently checked by motoring experts would cost “less than a tank of fuel” and will offer extra protection for those uncertain about a big purchase.

Motorists are liable for a classic car or second-hand vehicle when a transaction is complete meaning any hidden problems missed during an inspection could be costly.

Mike stressed the check would likely cost around £100 but would help give buyers peace of mind before parting ways with their cash.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “There are so many little checks you can do on a car that are really, really simple to avoid you getting your fingers burned.

“I’ve been trying to tell people and educate people for decades on how to buy a used car.

“Just use some knowledge before you turn up and see a red sports car and your heart goes first and you get your money out, don’t go for the red sports car, find out about the red sports car. Take time.

“Pay one of the major services like the RAC, the AA, Green Flag, you pay them the price of a tank of fuel, £100 and they will come down and inspect it for you and get all the data checks.

“That costs the same as a tank of fuel and you will know what you’re buying before you buy.”

However, road users on a tight budget can learn a lot about a potential purchase using tools at the disposal of almost everyone.

Simply searching for the registration number on GOV.UK’s online checker can bring up a whole host of information which might raise any red flags before finalising a deal.

Mike told Express.co.uk: “It’s actually much easier these days because there’s so much information online. If you’re going to buy a car that’s second hand you can check the car’s MOT history and service history by going on one of these free downloadable apps you can get on any smartphone.

“You type in the registration number and you can go through the MOT history so it will tell you if it had any failures in the past and what it failed on.

“That means when you’re looking at the car you can check to see if those things were repaired and if it passed again in the future.”

Wheeler Dealers World Tour will be available on Discovery Channel and discovery+, airing weekly on Mondays at 9pm from 29th April.
