Arsenal hero Ray Parlour says Mikel Arteta has a ‘big dilemma’ on his hands this summer if the club are unable to offer players European football next term.

The Gunners are battling for a Europa League spot and Wednesday’s 2-1 win against Liverpool has put Mikel Arteta’s men to within three points of Wolves in sixth.

Arteta has been promised funds to invest in his side this summer but the level of his spending will be determined by where Arsenal finish and a fourth season outside of the Champions League will prohibit the Spaniard from spending big.

How Arsenal finish the season could decide Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future, as the Gabon international is pushing for a contract of £250,000-a-week and is keen on playing European football next term.

But Parlour believes it the club will have even bigger problems in the recruitment department if they’re unable to offer potential new signings European football.

‘They need to send money,’ Parlour told Premier League Productions before Wednesday’s 2-1 win against Liverpool.

‘This summer is going to be really important that they do spend money.

‘But the problem that they do have is if you’re not playing European football, what player is going to want to go to Arsenal?

‘That’s the big dilemma facing Mikel Arteta in the transfer window.’

After playing a 3-4-3 system in the north London derby, Arteta stuck with the formation for his side’s 2-1 win against Liverpool at the Emirates on Wednesday.

Parlour believes the three at the back system suits Arsenal’s players and believes the Spaniard will stick with it moving forward.

‘I was a little bit shocked when they played Wolves that they went man-to- man really,’ said Parlour.

‘They played three at the back as well so I was a little bit surprised when he did change it but certainty Kieran Tierney – who is going to be a top player on that left hand side – he has that energy to get up and down to defend as well. He’ll be important.

‘Hector Bellerin it suits him on the right hand side. I think he might look at it [the system]. William Saliba will be coming into the club [too].
