How do I claim money back on flight delays?

The Delay Repay scheme enables customers to get refunds on delays from 15 minutes to more than two hours.

Under EU rule 261/2004, you may be entitled to between £110 and £540 if your EU flight is delayed by more than three hours for flights going back over the past six years (five in Scotland).

How do I get a refund on other inconveniences?

Lost luggage

Get a Property Irregularity Report before leaving baggage reclaim.

If your luggage goes missing on an outward flight, the airline should cover the cost of “essentials” and the lost luggage but claiming on travel insurance is easier and worth more.

Make the airline aware immediately and write to them within seven days of loss or damage.

Power

If you experience an unplanned power cut of more than 12 hours, you may be able to claim £70, and a further £70 for each additional 12 hours up to £700.

If it is planned, they must give two days’ warning.

Contact your distribution company.

Water

For unplanned disruption, supply must be restored within 48 hours of the provider knowing about it, or you are entitled to £20 compensation.

For planned work, you must have 48 hours notice or be compensated.

Roads

If a new road causes your property to lose value you may be entitled to compensation from the local council for local roads or Highways England.

You can also claim for damage to your vehicle caused by a road, such as potholes or loose paving.

Parcels

First and Second Class post not delivered by ten days after it is expected could be worth £20 compensation.

For missing or delayed Signed For it’s £50, and Special Delivery it is up to £500 compensation.

For other courier services, check their websites’ conditions.

Go to the relevant website for details to claim. You will need evidence of posting and probably proof of value of the item.

Signal

Phone and broadband providers each have their own terms.

For example, BT has a Daily Rental Refund for late connection or failure to repair and a fixed fee of £10 for failing to turn up to an appointment.

Regulator Ofcom has plans for customers to be automatically refunded on their bills for any service loss.

What’s the latest?

This week, thousands of families faced summer holiday misery after scorching weather and a technical fault with air traffic control wreaked havoc on London’s airports.

More than 60 flights were cancelled out of Heathrow on Friday and dozens more delayed after a malfunction hit Swanwick Air Traffic Control Centre.

Delays were rife at Gatwick as well owing to the technical fault affecting NATS radar system.

But the knock-on effects are likely to be felt throughout the weekend.

Flights are operating as normal from Heathrow, Gatwick, but flights to and from Luton are suffering “moderate” delays.

Meanwhile, Eurostar trains were suspended after a power cable “exploded” on a platform at Paris Gare du Nord, according to a manager.

Eurostar later said there was no cable explosion at the station, but a power issue was causing massive delays.

And Britain’s rail network was also sent into meltdown as this week’s travel misery continues.

Heathrow was the worst hit airport yesterday, with British Airways cancelling at least 30 flights as raging passengers blasting “disgraceful scenes” and seven-hour queues.
