'Vivid balayage' is this year's sophisticated take on rainbow hair (and it's so low-maintenance)

Summer may be well behind us but the trend for rainbow-hued tones and tints show absolutely no sign of abating.

Just look to our favourite celebrities for inspo; Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have all dipped their toe in the rainbow hair trend.

If vibrant block colour isn’t your jam, a new colour trend allows you to embrace bold colours in a more subtle fashion. Enter: vivid balayage.

As Sophia Hilton, founder of Not Another Salon, explains to GLAMOUR: “Three or four years ago, the full-head bleach and bright colours were booming but the trend will well and truly curve in 2020. People are still asking for crazy colour, but the increase in those colours going over the top of balayage is out of control.

“People still want the vivids, they just will require it to be low-maintenance in 2020. Applying on top of a balayage ensures that the ‘grow out’ process looks beautiful.”

As Sophia explains, vivid and bright colours aren’t rebellious anymore. “We’ve come along way from the DIY bedroom dip-dyes of our teen years, and clients now understand that these shades can look luxurious and expensive if done in the right way,” she said. “When paired with a classic technique like balayage, not only is the finished effect really beautiful and blended, but the grow out and maintenance process is SO much easier.”

To get the look, you have to create the base, which it’s exactly the same technique as a regular blonde balayage. This technique involves freehand painting or foiling the bleach onto the hair so you have complete control over the amount of coverage and placement. “At this stage we always include our magic drops of INNOluxe to keep damage at bay. Colour always looks it’s best on a healthy base, after all,” she said.

Next comes the fun part… you get to pick out a vivid colour for the stylist to apply over the top.

Just like any other vivid colour, Sophia says it’s going to fade. “We always give clients custom colour pots to take home for in-shower top-ups. We also love POWER by Crazy Color, which can be mixed into your home care for a colour top-up, where you’re in complete control over strength of pigment. As for growing out, with a beautiful root blend thanks to the balayage your regrowth should be seamless until you’re ready for your next colour appointment,” she said.
