Virgil van Dijk has allayed injury concerns after he took a painful knock in Netherlands win over Turkey on Tuesday night, saying he’s ‘already over’ the blow to his ankle.

Netherlands romped to a 6-1 win over Turkey in Amsterdam during their World Cup qualifying campaign with a hat-trick from Memphis Depay and goals from Davy Klaasen, Guus Til and Donyell Malen.

It was a very comfortable night out for the Dutch, with Turkey’s consolation only coming in stoppage time, but there was a concern when Van Dijk took a whack late in the game.

Goalkeeper Justin Bijlow played a poor pass to the Liverpool star, leading to the big defender going down and holding his ankle and causing concern for Reds fans everywhere.

The 30-year-old missed the majority of last season with a serious knee injury, but he says this knock was nothing to worry about.

‘I’m fine, luckily. I’m already over it,’ Van Dijk said straight after the game. ‘Maybe because I am so big, they think I am acting, because when I go down, it goes in quite a slow way.’

Van Dijk has returned to the Liverpool team this season, playing every minute of their three Premier League games so far this season.

There is serious competition for places at centre-back for the Reds now, with Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and summer signing Ibrahima Konate all available, but Van Dijk remains the main man at the heart of defence, with Matip emerging as his regular partner so far this campaign.
