Vegans storm pig farm they claim keeps hundreds of animals in filthy pens

Animal rights activists today (Mon) stormed a British piggery farm in protest against poor living conditions. See SWNS story SWLEpigs. Around 80 campaigners from action group from 'Meat The Victims' remain at the farm in a peaceful sit-down protest following the alleged mistreatment of hundreds of pigs. A series of disturbing photos and video footage were taken following a three-month investigation at Moss Rose Piggeries in Blackpool, Lancs., by activists who had gained access to expose the firm. It?s claimed pigs were seen living in unsanitary conditions with many of them covered in their own waste in filthy concrete pens. A number of animals on site were also allegedly seen housed on dirty and wet tiled flooring causing a clear slipping hazard. Several were spotted with significant injuries that look to have left blood stains splattered across the floors and walls, it was said. Others were it?s claimed pictured with seemingly untreated prolapses, which is when one or more organs slip out of place and causes bulging on the body. Mr Baguley, from Blackpool, said the farm had been inspected three times by the DEFRA, Red Tractor and the companies they supply to since the investigation.

He said: ‘Meat The Victims’ are supposed to have been before two or three months ago, but it was in the night.

‘I have been inspected three times since they supposedly came and there was one incident in one inspection that two of the 90 water drinkers for the pigs were blocked.

Moss Rose Piggeries is a ‘Red Tractor approved’ farm, which means its product quality has been certified by a food regulation organisation called Assured Food Standards.

One campaigner, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: ‘From looking over the Red Tractor documentation for pigs, we believe Moss Rose are in violation of a number of guidelines.

‘They include risk to animal welfare, vermin control, unhygienic conditions, lack of dry lying areas, inappropriate flooring, unsuitable access to food and water, unsuitable feed, lack of environmental enrichment and more.

‘We also believe the farm are in violation of DEFRA guidelines including unsuitable hygiene, husbandry and accommodation and inadequate care of sick and injured animals.’
