Urgent product recall for contact lenses amid fears of eye-scratching particles

A widely-sold brand of contact lenses could have become contaminated with rogue particles which could cause abrasions on the wearer’s eyeball.

An alert and product recall has been issued for Johnson & Johnson Acuvuee daily disposable lenses. The recall specifically relates to batches of 1-day Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism lenses.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) say the contact lens or the lenses’ blister solution could have come into contact with particles which scratch the eyes.

There is a danger of “eye redness or discomfort or corneal abrasion”.

A statement from MHRA says: “The affected lots may have particles on the contact lens or in the contact lens blister solution.

“If the particles are not noticed before insertion into the eye, this could cause eye redness or discomfort or corneal abrasion (damage to the surface of the eye).”

The affected batches are Acuvue brands

Opticians have been alerted

There have as of yet been no reports of serious damage to lenses wearers but opticians and optometrists have been warned about the recall and told to alert patients.

Mark Birse, who is group manager for device safety and surveillance at MHRA, said: “While the risk is low, the MHRA takes the safety of the medicines and devices we regulate very seriously.

“It is therefore important that as many customers as possible are made aware of the need to check their lenses for these lot numbers.

“Contact lens users who still have concerns should contact their optician or optometrist.

“They can also report any adverse effects to the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.”

Lense wearers should speak with their optician if they are concerned.

If the particles are not detected wearers could suffer abrasions in the eyes
