Two-tone hair is the 90s hair colour trend celebrities can't get enough of

2019 has been quite the year for hair colour trends.

We’ve seen our favourite celebrities (from Kendall Jenner to Bella Hadid) going lighter with blonde, others opting for a rich brunette hue, and some even experimenting with grey hair.

The adventurous beauty buffs among us have even trialled chunky highlights and Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2019. And just when we thought our favourite tastemakers had pushed the boundaries of beauty, they’re experimenting with the boldest hair colour trend yet.

The likes of Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish are rocking rebellious two-tone hair; hair dyed two boldly contrasting colours for that IDGAF nonchalance.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the trend, Jason Hogan, Celebrity Colour Expert at Josh Wood Atelier, said: “This look is reminiscent of the late 90s early 00s when bright highlights through the top of the crown and the nape were kept natural or tinted darker to achieve heavy contrast.

“This look takes it further and incorporates the sides, too, which adds extra attitude to the front. The style works very well with shorter styles such as Dua Lipa’s current textured bob. It’s a very strong look that mightn’t be for most, especially as it grows in and becomes heavy on the root – which adds to the rebel appeal. The style confronts the new normal of naturalised colour.”

We’re into it.

If you’re thinking about trialling the colour trend, why not have a fresh chop whilst you’re at it? As Jason says, the bob is the style to opt for. The blunt bob is sweeping our Instagram feed with Kaia Gerber, Lily James, Saoirse Ronan and Kim Kardashian all rocking jaw-skimming styles that feel modern, refreshing and a little bit sexy.

If you do decide to take the plunge with two-tone hair, don’t forget to protect your hair with a nourishing and strengthening treatment like Olaplex, and swap to sulphate free shampoos to get the most out of your colour.
