Trent Alexander-Arnold hints at positional change for Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has not ruled out playing a starring role in Liverpool’s midfield in the years to come.

The Reds full back has enjoyed a meteoric start to his Anfield career, cementing his first team place and going onto appear in a Champions League final.

But it seems the 20-year-old England international is not prepared to rest on his laurels, after suggesting he would be happy to occupy a midfield spot.

BT and BBC pundit Gary Lineker has previously suggested that Alexander-Arnold could play that role.

And when asked by Lineker on the Premier League show, Alexander-Arnold said: “That’s up to the manager. I’m happy to play wherever he puts me I think.”

“Right now obviously he sees me as a full-back and I’m more than happy playing there.

“I think it’s important to bring different dimensions to the position.”

The Liverpool-born star completed a dream season by earning a call up to England’s World Cup squad in the summer, making his debut in the group defeat to Belgium.

Since then he has been ever-present in Gareth Southgate’s squad selections, and pointed to a former England player he wishes to emulate.

Alexander-Arnold added: “Obviously when I was growing up Ashley Cole came in and showed that you don’t have to just be a defender as a full-back.

“He came in and dominated going forward, brought a new dimension and changed the way full-backs are now.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp can take much of the credit of his players emergence, after handing the youngster his debut.

And despite using his protege more sparingly this campaign, Alexander-Arnold knows Klopp only has his best interests at heart.

Speaking on Klopp, he added: “He understands that I’m still young, I’m not used to maybe playing every game in a season.

“He understands what my body is like and how much and how often I can play.

“He knows it’s important maybe not to overdo it for a young lad. And he’s shown that when he needs to, he’ll rotate me.”
