Tottenham's winners and losers if Antonio Conte takes over from Jose Mourinho

Tottenham could be set to appoint Antonio Conte within days, after reports on Wednesday suggested he was in advanced talks with the club over taking over.

Spurs are still on the hunt for a permanent boss after sacking Jose Mourinho in April, having gone through the last part of the season with Ryan Mason in temporary charge.

Conte has just won the Italian Serie A as manager of Inter Milan, but financial restrictions meant he left at the end of the season.

Now, he could be set to return to the Premier League, and Mirror Football has taken a look at Spurs’ potential winners and losers if Conte were to take over.

Winners

Matt Doherty

Matt Doherty will likely be Tottenham’s first-choice right back next season, with Serge Aurier’s future up in the air.

Conte likes to play with wing-backs providing attacking threat from out wide, and Doherty will likely be employed in one of those roles.

The Irish international, 29, will likely be one of Conte’s most relied-upon players next season and will be key in attacking and creating chances for a central striker pairing.

Tanguy Ndombele

Judging by Conte’s tactics at Chelsea and Inter, central midfielders will be vital to his new-look Spurs side.

Ndombele shone under Mourinho in his second season at the club, and could thrive in a new-look system.

His box-to-box ability, attacking presence and defensive knowledge will be crucial to him remaining in Conte’s team.

Harry Kane

If anyone was wondering about how Harry Kane would get on in an Antonio Conte team, see Romelu Lukaku’s 2020-21 season, as Kane will be asked to play in much the same way.

Lukaku was the driving force in Inter’s title-winning side, with his 24 goals and ten assists one of the driving forces behind their capture of the Serie A crown.

Kane’s future remains up in the air, but the prospect of a successful manager coming in who will be able to get Spurs challenging for trophies will no doubt be interesting to him at the very least.

Losers

Steven Bergwijn

Steven Bergwijn seems to be the forgotten man at Tottenham after a poor season.

The winger is unlikely to feature too prominently if Conte takes over, either, due to the Italian manager’s tactics of using wing-backs to provide attacking threat.

Conte’s teams usually attack with two central strikers and his two wing-backs, so it’s unlikely Bergwijn will have a role.

Dele

Dele’s talent is undoubted, as he showed during flashes when he was reintroduced to the team under Mason.

But the creative midfielder shines when he’s given the freedom to get the ball forward without having to worry too much about getting back and defending, hence why he was unpopular with Mourinho.

Unfortunately, it’s rather unlikely he’ll be played in his preferred role under Conte, despite his ludicrous ability.
