Tottenham launch raid on Leeds for £30m midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Tottenham have launched a second raid on Leeds after joining the bidding for rising midfield star Kalvin Phillips.

Tottenham have already paid Leeds £9million for teenage winger Jack Clarke, who is remaining on loan at Elland Road next season, and are now targeting Phillips.

Spurs can offer Phillips Champions League football and a hefty increase on his current £10,000-a-week salary at Leeds.

Aston Villa have made the early running in the race to sign Phillips, who was named in the EFL Team of the Season, and have offered £11million.

Newcastle are also keen on the Leeds academy graduate, while Bournemouth and Wolves are understood to have cooled their initial interest.

Leeds remain adamant that any Premier League suitor will have to pay around £30million for Phillips and they are desperate to hang on to the versatile holding midfielder.

Phillips is a boyhood Leeds fan and the club are confident he will not agitate for a move.

They have tabled him a new contract to reward him for his progress and are confident he will stay, even though he has rejected their opening offer.

Phillips, 23, played the full 90 minutes in Leeds’ 2-1 friendly win over Guiseley on Thursday night and will jet out with Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for their tour of Australia next week.

Leeds face fierce rivals Manchester United in Perth on Wednesday before playing Western Sydney three days later.
