How we’re looking heading into Day 7 tonight!

  • FOOTBALL FAVS

Spain continue to head the market for the men’s Olympic football title.

Though no European side has won it since they did in 1992.

Brazil aren’t far behind in the betting, with hosts Japan next at a bigger price.

    Paddy Power betting

    • Spain 5/4
    • Brazil 6/4
    • Japan 8/1
    • Mexico 12/1
    • South Korea 14/1
    • Egypt 33/1
    • Ivory Coast 50/1
    • New Zealand 100/1
  • RECORD

As the work in the pool gets even better, Adam Peaty was pleased to bag another European and Olympic record.

He ran the second leg of the mixed 4x100m relay behind Kathleen Dawson.

  • HORSE FLIGHT

Ever wondered how they get the horses over to Tokyo?

The process of getting them all into the most strictly-organised Games in living memory has been intense.

Teams are already planning how they will operate at the 2024 Paris Olympics and in 2028 at Los Angeles.

But the unique Tokyo Games led to teams being uncertain if they were even going in the first place.

    ALL THE INFO

  • BILES SUPPORT

Simone Biles was in attendance to watch team-mate Sunisa Lee win gold earlier.

And her fan girling didn’t stop there, as her Instagram story showed.

  • CLEANED OUT

Two cleaners were almost wiped out as they tried to mop the Basketball court while play continued.

The action-packed preliminary group game at the Saitama Super Arena meant the cleaners had to keep themselves busy.

But the pair timed their dash to mop badly, and had to retreat as Slovenia powered up the court towards the hoop – making it another funny incident to take place at Tokyo 2020.

The pair’s decision to step onto the court luckily didn’t effect the outcome of the game.

Slovenia rolled over host nations comfortably, winning the game 116-81.

  • POOL STRENGTH

The aquatics have gone from strength to strength.

And star man Adam Peaty reckons others idolise the British team now.

It’s been good. It just shows that British Swimming is really going from strength to strength. Over the last six years, the culture, the ethos and everything we live by has evolved into something that’s idolised by other teams now.

  • MEDAL COUNT

The table as day six finishes up in Tokyo.

The usual suspects at the head of affairs with Team GB in a more than respectable sixth.

  • EIGHTEEN THE NUMBER

Team GB have won an impressive 18 medals so far.

Team GB have won FIVE gold medals, which are as follows:

    • Adam Peaty – Men’s 100m breaststroke
    • Tom Daley and Matty Lee – Men’s 10m platform diving
    • Tom Pidcock – Men’s mountain biking
    • Tom Dean – Men’s swimming 200m freestyle
    • Swimming – men’s 4x200m freestyle relay (Tom Dean, James Guy, Matthew Richards & Duncan Scott)

And they have won seven silver medals so far:

    • Bradly Sinden – Men’s 68kg Taekwondo
    • Alex Yee – Men’s Triathlon
    • Lauren Williams – Women’s 67kg Taekwondo
    • Georgia Taylor-Brown – Women’s Triathlon
    • Duncan Scott – Men’s swimming 200m freestyle
    • Rowing – men’s quadruple sculls (Jack Beaumont, Angus Groom, Harry Leask, Tom Barras)
    • Mallory Franklin – Caneo Slalom

And finally, we have won six bronze medals so far, which are as follows:

    • Chelsie Giles – Women’s 52kg Judo
    • Bianca Walkden – Women’s 67kg Taekwondo
    • Women’s team gymnastics
    • Women’s Team Dressage
    • Charlotte Dujardin – Women’s Individual Dressage
    • Matthew Coward-Holley – Men’s Trap (shooting)
  • SUN SHINES

Sunisa Lee’s star performance earlier today in the women’s all-around gymnastics meant the Olympic gold medal was won again by the United States – despite Simone Biles’ absence.

Biles, the pre-Olympics favourite, pulled out of the competition, citing ongoing mental health concerns, leaving the way for Lee to pick up the mantle to win in Tokyo.

A silver medal winner in the team event, the 18-year-old qualified third but was not tipped by many to extend the United States’ streak of all-around titles that extends back to 2004.

  • KEEPING TABS

Watford, Crystal Palace and Brentford are keeping tabs on New Zealand hotshot Matthew Garbett.

The 19-year-old striker played alongside Burnley’s Chris Wood in their nation’s Olympic football 0-0 draw with Romania in Tokyo on Wednesday.

And scouts of the Premier League trio were impressed with London-born Garbett’s display as New Zealand clinched an historic first quarter-final spot against hosts Japan on Saturday morning.

Garbett is one of the most sought-after teenagers in Europe after joining Swedish second-tier club Falkenbergs in January 2020.

That switch from NZ Central Premier League followed his stand-out displays in the 2019 Under-17s World Cup.

Franklin qualified in the quickest time and sustained another solid run down as she bagged second place!

  • PULL IT OUT

Kathleen Dawson was thrilled to get the 4x100m mixed relay off to a flyer for Team GB earlier this morning.

Dawson done well to keep the team intact, with many of the other squads putting men out first.

It was great, I’m glad I managed to pull it out for the team event and do something I couldn’t for the individual. I’m really happy we managed to go through in first place as well.

This Clare Balding interview of course!

  • THEIR REACTION

How the 16-year-olds spoke following their performances.

It’s my first world ranking, so I know where I am and where I stand and it’s knowing how much I need to improve and over the years hopefully I will just grow.
I’ve got a few days to rest the legs up ready for the floor final.

    Jessica GadirovaBBC

So pleased and happy to be out here it’s my first major, coming here doing an all-around final, my first ever I didn’t know what to expect I just wanted to enjoy it and coming in the top 15 – I’m happy about it, it’s not too bad.
I still can’t believe it – coming away with the bronze, doing this final and doing it with Jess as well I couldn’t ask for any more really.
I’m first reserve for the floor finals, so I may be able to take a spot and if she [Simone Biles] drops out last minute I will be ready to go.

    Jennifer GadirovaBBC

  • BEST EVER

An incredible showing from Jessica Gadirova, getting top 10 and is the first ever British woman to do so.
