Tokyo Olympics 2020 Day 2 LIVE RESULTS: Andy Murray WITHDRAWS, Jade Jones OUT, Adam Peaty breezes through to final

ANDY MURRAY and Jade Jones gold medal defences have both come to an end on a dismal Day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics for the Brits.

However, Andy Murray has dropped a bombshell by withdrawing from his tennis Singles title defence just hours before he was set to face Felix Auger Aliassime.

The two-time gold medalist confirmed his medical team has advised him against playing both the Singles and Doubles.

Murray will therefore continue playing in the Doubles with Joe Salisbury.

Jones meanwhile fell at the first hurdle to Kimia Alizadeh of the Refugee team.

And Team GB women’s hockey went down to Germany 2-1 in a close fought opening match of their title defence.

But Adam Peaty is safely through to the Men’s 100m Breaststroke final after another commanding victory in the pool.

After nearly two months out, Naomi Osaka is back competing.

And the Japanese tennis star has taken her opening set 6-1 against China’s Zheng Saisai.

She is now the favourite to win after top seed Ashleigh Barty was knocked out in the first round.

  • 🥇 GOLD FOR HORIGOME 🥇

Japan’s Yori Horigome has won the very first gold medal in the men’s skateboard street final.

The 22-year-old nailed his final three tricks to win with a final score of 37.18.

Brazil’s Kelvin Hoefler takes the silver medal, with American Jagger Eaton taking home the bronze.

Favourite Nyjah Huston ended in seventh.

  • RACE IS ON!

The women’s road race final is now underway.

The 137km route starts in Tokyo before finishing Tokyo on the Fuji International Speedway circuit.

  • HORIGOME LEADS

Japan’s Yuto Horigome once again leads in the street final!

What a fourth run from the 22-year-old.

He has come from nowhere to nail his last two tricks.

  • SKATING TO SUCCESS

The men’s skateboarding street final is well underway.

Team USA’s Jagger Eaton currently leads ahead of Japans’s Yuto Horigome.

  • DOUBLE DELIGHT

    Yes boys!

British pair Graeme Thomas and John Collins have secured their place in the men’s double sculls final.

They finished second in their semi-final.

And Vicky Thornley is into the single sculls semi-final after coming home in third in her quarter-final race.

  • ROAD RACE

The women’s road race is set to get underway.

Lizzie Deignan and Anna Shackley are representing Team GB.

Holland’s Anna van der Breggen goes into the race as the outright favourite as she defends her title.

  • TENNIS SHOCK

    What is happening today?!

Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty is OUT in the women’s tennis event in the first round.

The top seed has lost in straight sets against Spain’s Sara Sorribes.

Sorribes has never went beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

And she will now be full of confidence after beating the reigning Wimbledon champion 6-4, 6-3.

  • OH MY JONES

REPORT: Jade Jones’ dream of an Olympic treble was shattered as she was knocked out in the opening round of the Taekwondo 57kg class.

The Welsh wonder took an early lead against Iranian Kimia Zenoorin, representing the Refugee Team.

But the 28-year-old was never able to get on top of the Rio bronze medallist, who led with the final two minutes to come.

A kick to Jones’ trunk put her behind in the last minute before Jones unsuccessfully appealed against a two point penalty call.

The tension was clear as the video referee looked at the decision before confirming it.

Another penalty put the task beyond Jones as she lost 16-10 to go out.

  • AND HE’S OUT

Andy Murray essentially ended a glorious Olympic singles career after withdrawing from the Tokyo Games with a quad strain.

Several hours before he was due to face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round at the Ariake Tennis Park, the news came through that the two-time defending champion had withdrawn.

After his first-round doubles match with Joe Salisbury in the fierce Japanese heat on Saturday – the pair beat the French No.2 seeds in their first match together – the Scot felt tightness in his thigh.

Following medical advice with Team GB doctors at the Olympic Village, it was decided he should only focus on one event and there is understandably better chance of a medal in the men’s doubles competition.

The former world No.1 said: “I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events.

“So I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe.”

  • COR BLIMEY

American golfer Bryson DeChambeau has tested positive for coronavirus.

And the 2020 US Open has been forced to withdraw from the Games.

DeChambeau said: “I am deeply disappointed not to be able to compete in the Olympics for Team USA.

“Representing my country means the world to me and it is was a tremendous honour to make this team.

“I wish Team USA the best of luck next week in Tokyo. I will now focus on getting healthy, and I look forward to returning to competition once I am cleared to do so.”

  • SHOCK LOSS

JADE JONES IS OUT OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES!

The two-time Olympic judo gold medallist has lost in the opening round against Kimia Alizadeh Zonouzi.

Representing the Refugee Olympic Team, Zonouzi edged out the Team GB star 16-12.

This is a massive, massive shock.

Jones was seeded first, while Zonouzi was ranked 16th going into the event.

  • GREAT SCOT

Andy Murray appears to have withdrawn from the Men’s Singles in tennis.

The Brit was set to defend his title against Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime this morning.

However, he has now been removed from today’s Order of Play and replaced by Australia’s Max Purcell.

It is not yet known whether he will continue his Doubles campaign with Joe Salisbury.

  • ON TRACK

Adam Peaty is safely through to the Men’s 100m Breakstroke final in first place, as expected.

The Brit was dominant once again but slightly slower than his time in yesterday’s heat, coming in at 57.63 seconds.

Peaty, who has set all of the fastest 15 ever times in his event, will be overwhelming favourite for tomorrow’s final.

And it’ll be another early start if you want to catch it live, as it takes place at 3.12am.

  • WIL TO WIN

James Wilby has made it through to the final of the Men’s 100m breaststroke where he is set to face Adam Peaty.

And Peaty will be encouraged by an underwhelming win for his main rival, Dutchman Arno Kamminga.

He took first place with a time of 58.19 seconds.

  • HAF SOME OF THAT

Here’s the moment Ahmed Hafnaoui won only Tunisia’s fifth gold medal in Olympic Games history.

The 18-year-old was a rank outsider starting in Lane 8 but never let up as he pipped Australia’s Jack McLaughlin to first place.

And just look what it meant to his coach!

  • SEVENTH FOR WILMOTT

Team GB swimmer Aimee Wilmott might be a little disappointed with her seventh-placed finish in the 400m individual medley final.

Yui Ohashi secured Japan’s first gold in the pool with a scintillating performance.

Speaking after the final, Wilmott said: “It’s where I am at, I just wanted to have fun.

“Since I was 10 years old my parents have been at every meet, I’m gutted they’re not here.

“The time was off the boil, but I had to get in and give it my best.”

  • FULL TIME – TEAM GB 1 GERMANY 2

Team GB’s golden girls have started with their Olympic title defence with a defeat against Germany.

The Brits enjoyed near total domination as they took the lead the first quarter and should have gone into that break further ahead.

Germany then regrouped in the second quarter and equalised through a controversial penalty stroke.

And Charlotte Stapenhorst then went on to win the game on the counter-attack in the third quarter for a clinical German side.

All is far from lost however, with four teams from six set to go through to the quarter-final.

  • YELLOW CARD!

Germany will be a woman down for almost all of the remainder of the match.

Goalscorer Victoria Huse is handed a yellow card and a five-minute penalty.

Just under six minutes remain for Team GB to snatch a draw here as the Germans defend a 2-1 lead.

  • FOUR GOODNESS SAKE

It’s heartbreak for Max Litchfield after a second straight fourth placed finish in the Olympic Games.

The Brit started as an outsider in Lane 8 but looked like he might have done enough to pinch a bronze medal in the 400m Individual Medley.

However Brendan Smith of Australia managed to hold on for third place as Litchfield finished joint fourth with Hungary’s David Verraszte.

Chase Kalisz of the United States was the race winner.

  • INCREDIBLE SCENES IN THE POOL!

A HUGE shock in the men’s 400m freestyle as Tunisian Ahmed Hafnaoui surges home to take gold.

Many thought the 18-year-old making the final was the biggest achievement – but the top talent had other ideas.

The teenager could barely believe it, and neither could his coach, as both went crazy at the end.

    Brilliant scenes.

  • TEAM GB 1 GERMANY 2

It’s the Germans who lead in an even match.

Team GB have put on the bulk of the pressure but failed to make numerous penalty corners pay off.

And that’s led to Germany taking the lead through a breakaway in the third quarter.

15 minutes for the Brits to salvage the game.

  • TEAM GB 1 GERMANY 2

A first penalty corner awarded to Germany.

Great Britain go upstairs and lose their referral as the decision stands.

Bad news for Team GB fans but for those who just want to get on with the game, probably for the greater good.

  • GOAL!

Good British pressure at the start of the third quarter but it’s the Germans who strike.

Another goalmouth scramble sees the Brits fail to force the ball home.

Germany then break and within seconds Stapenhorst converts from close range.

  • HALF TIME – TEAM GB 1 GERMANY 1

Some choice words on the German benches at the end of the first quarter have had the desired effect.

With most of the second quarter played in the British half, a controversial penalty stroke call led to an equaliser for the 2016 bronze medalists.

Victoria Huse then converted despite mishitting the ball.

Team GB came back into the game in the final minutes of the second quarter, creating a couple of chances which they were unable to convert.
