Today’s back pages: World Cup agony and heartbreak for England’s Lionesses

Another semi-final and another agonising defeat for English football – this time at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.

England’s Lionesses missed out on the chance of playing in their first World Cup final after losing 2-1 to holders United States in Lyon last night.

Needing a goal to force extra-time it was “heartbreak” for England, says The Guardian and Metro. Ellen White saw an effort ruled out for offside and then with minutes left on the clock captain Steph Houghton missed a penalty.

The Daily Telegraph called the defeat “simply agonising” for Phil Neville’s side, who will now have to play in the third/fourth-placed match on Saturday against either Sweden or the Netherlands.

Despite the defeat The Sun quotes head coach Neville who said the England squad had “the time of our lives” on their World Cup run.
