Today’s back pages: VAR rescues Arsenal in a battle of the fallen giants

Premier League matchweek seven
Manchester United 1 Arsenal 1

The Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal dominates the back pages of today’s UK newspapers.

In a game played in torrential rain at Old Trafford United took the lead when Scott McTominay fired home from the edge of the box just before half-time.

The Gunners hit back on 58 minutes when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang coolly finished after breaking through the United defence.

Aubameyang’s effort was initially ruled out for offside, but The Times and i Sport report that VAR rescued the Gunners after replays showed that the striker was being played onside by Harry Maguire.

It was a battle of the “fallen giants”, says The Daily Telegraph, with the glory days “long gone” for both clubs.

The Daily Mirror adds that a poor match of wasted chances was “a pale imitation of classic battles of the past”.
