Today’s back pages: ‘Firmidable’ Liverpool march on and Solskjaer must sort it out

Reds win late at Wolves

Liverpool’s latest Premier League victory, their 22nd in 23 matches, makes all the back pages with the papers agreeing that the 16-point lead at the top of the table all but guarantees them their first title since 1990.

“The Firmidables” is The Sun’s headline, a nod to Roberto Firmino, whose late winner at Wolverhampton Wanderers secured Liverpool their 2-1 win.

According to the paper the Brazilian and his team-mates are also intent on emulating the Arsenal squad of 2003-04, the “Invincibles”, who not only won the league title that season but did so without losing a match.

The Guardian and The Times lead with photos of Firmino celebrating his goal six minutes from time, which helped the Reds maintain their unbeaten campaign.

The Daily Mirror leads with “40 love” – alongside a photo of Firmino – and explains that Liverpool have now gone 40 league games without losing. Their last league defeat was against Manchester City on 3 January 2019.

Not that Jurgen Klopp’s men had it all their own way at Molineux last night.

The Mirror says: “Had it not been for the resistance of Alisson [in goal], the invincible quest would surely have been over. Instead, cue Firmino and Liverpool doing what they always do. Unstoppable, unbeatable.”

Sort it out, Ole

If Jurgen Klopp can do no wrong at Liverpool right now, at Manchester United nothing is going right for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose fate hangs in the balance.

The Daily Star and the Daily Express both go with “Sort it out, Ole” with the former warning: “Solskjaer is in the firing line if the slump continues.”

According to the Daily Mirror’s back page, the beleaguered United boss has been given the dreaded vote of confidence by the board. However, he has been told in no uncertain terms that the team “must show progress by the end of the season”.

Apparently the United board accepts that the club’s injury crisis has been a factor in their recent poor run, but Solskjaer has been warned that he will be sacked in May if there isn’t a marked improvement between now and then.
